Get ODBII codes by key turns?

Hey all...don't know if I've been led down the primrose path here with what I've found online previously...but I've seen that it's possible to obtain trouble codes stored in my Jeep by inserting the Key in the ignition, and turning it 'on-off' 3 times (one place said do it 5 times), and on the last turn, leave it in the 'on' position. This is supposed to them show the stored trouble codes on the dash display.
I've done this countless times and get nothing, yet I still have a check engine light on...if this just a joke that are played on newbies?
If it is possible...what am I missing? does the seatbelt have to be buckled/the lights have to be on/the radio set to easy listening stations only/do the hokey pokey etc???

any advice would be appreciated. I have a 2005 Cherokee Laredo, 3.7L.

Cheers!

PK

Re: Get ODBII codes by key turns?

definatly real, have used it on my 2007 numerous times. You can always run to advance auto, or autozone and they will scan it for free.

Re: Get ODBII codes by key turns?

I have done this with a wrangler, I think I remember reading the owners manual( yes , I read it ....I was bored ) about something like this .... I will have to look .

You can also reprogram a new key this way. ( I can vouch for this , I did it with our commander)

Re: Get ODBII codes by key turns?

Ha, found it and a video ,lol

and for those that want to program their own keys

Customer Key Programming
You can program new keys to the system if you have two
valid keys by doing the following:
1. Cut the additional Sentry Key Transponder blank(s) to
match the ignition switch lock cylinder key code.
2. Insert the first valid key into the ignition switch and
turn the ignition switch ON for at least 3 seconds but no
longer than 15 seconds. Turn the ignition switch OFF and
remove the first key.
3. Insert the second valid key and turn the ignition
switch ON within 15 seconds. After ten seconds, a chime
will sound and the SKIS indicator light will begin to
flash. Turn the ignition switch OFF and remove the
second key.
4. Insert a blank Sentry Key into the ignition switch and
turn the ignition switch ON within 60 seconds. After 10
seconds, a single chime will sound. The SKIS indicator
light will stop flashing, turn on for 3 seconds; then turn off.
The new Sentry Key has been programmed. Repeat this
process to program up to a total of 8 keys.

Re: Get ODBII codes by key turns?

Hey Thanks guys...I've seen videos like that as well...but for the life of me, I cannot get ANY codes or 'DTC Report' to show up. All I see is the regular display (Compasss/temperature)...It's driving me bonkers!!!!!

I've looked through my owners manual (not cover to cover) and haven't seen it anywhere...this is why I posted this question...I must be missing something. Would it matter that I have my display in Metric? (I'm in Canada)..

Super weird...

Cheers

Re: Get ODBII codes by key turns?

try just going from on to ACC 3 times.( on /acc On /acc on /acc ON ) some will work that way as well. shouldnt matter about the metric thing

Please make sure you are going to the " on " position not the ACC on the on/off on/off on/off on

Yeah, they don't have instructions in the manual at all.

It's all about timing. Once you get it right, you'll be able to pull the codes time and time again but it takes a little practice to know how quickly to go between off and on.

I have a Canadian vehicle as well, and I am able to pull the codes so it should work.

This has been a feature on Jeeps for years, so many of us have had plenty of practice...

Re: Get ODBII codes by key turns?

Thanks again for the tips guys...but still no luck. I've been trying this for days it seems. I'm positive I'm going from 'off' to 'on' (not acc). I've tried it fast, tried it slow and in-between...still no luck. Hell, I had an 86 Fiero and it was easier to pull the codes off of that! : )
Anyway...no Autozone or whatever here that'll pull my codes for free...was left to go to Crappy Tire (Canadian Tire...big chain here in Canada) to charge me an hour's labour to pull the codes. Can't find the bill right at the moment, but it was three codes...misfire detected, lean condition upstream O2, Rich condition downstream O2 sensor (believe it was bank#2). They said to change and gap the spark plugs...I did it myself, but still have the same issue.
I just wanted to pull the codes again myself to see if anything changed after the plugs were done...but not have to fork over $100 to do it.
I've searched this forum and have seen others with the same symptoms as mine...but haven't seen any 'final' solutions...
In a nutshell...I start the Jeep, and it idles like crap...Check engine light goes on, and flashes for a while...engine is definetly missing. After about a few minutes, the hesitation stops, no more missing, and it drives OK...until I park it and turn it off. (go to the store or something like that). Start it up again, and it happens again...but eventually drives fine after it goes through it's 'little thing' at startup.
I've tried using the 'good gas' (higher octane)...think it might have made it worse, 'cause it happens more frequently now.
This Jeep is gonna be the death of me...85 000 miles and I've already needed the rear Diff done last year, and I only highway drive!
Anyway...thansk for the help guys...looks like I gotta pay the 'stealership' to get this one fixed...
Cheers!

Re: Get ODBII codes by key turns?

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty Limited - I check my codes all the time. Close the driver door, crank the key to the last click (just before the car would start) and back again - do this three times forward/back, forward/back forward/back and your codes will run across your odometer. This also works on Dodge vehicles (specifically Ram and Charger). P Codes can be found here: Dodge - Chrysler - Jeep - Plymouth OBD-II Trouble Codes
