Re: How to "activate" a switch blank '08+ (radar detector hardwire remote mute/LEDs)

this is a $$$$$ install if i ever saw one...i was thinking of using these directions to do mine the same way, but i think im going to go a different (read easier, or lazy) route, and take apart my cig lighter adapter to make something similar to this with an actual on/off switch next to the mute. thanks for the tips tho, and what a great writeup!

Re: How to "activate" a switch blank '08+ (radar detector hardwire remote mute/LEDs)

I know this is an old thread, but what did you use to cut the holes in the switch blank? you mention the file set from Harbor Freight, but don't really say how the cut was made. Also, were you able to pick up that plexi somewhere that comes that small or was it severely trimmed down in order to fit?

To make the hole I just used a very small drill bit, just large enough to fit a needle file through. Then with the file, I filed it into a square.

The LED windows were made from a large sheet of standard plexi/lexan. I used a utility knife to score (on both sides) the piece I wanted, then I used pliers to snap it off.

Re: How to "activate" a switch blank '08+ (radar detector hardwire remote mute/LEDs)

Wow - thanks for the quick response! I'm planning on doing this exact same thing for a power inverter switch. The power inverter already has a push button switch, but will have to see if it's too big to fit within the button. It's good to know that you're still a resource around here for this project, I'm sure I'll have a few more questions as I take this project on.

Re: How to "activate" a switch blank '08+ (radar detector hardwire remote mute/LEDs)

if the button is too big, don't be afraid to swap it out with a smaller one. If you have more questions, ask away! I'll do my best to answer them.

Re: How to "activate" a switch blank '08+ (radar detector hardwire remote mute/LEDs)

does the manufacturer make an on/off switch the same size that will operate LED emergency light for the volunteer FD I am on? or use the same momentary contact to operate remote relay to turn them on and off?

I want to do something similar, too. I'm sure there's something that will work but I haven't had a chance to look. Next time I go to MD I'll check out the store to see what they have.
