Re: HOW TO: Change out PRND Bezel/Gear Shift

Youre welcome man. I talked with the service manager at both dealerships and they told me that you could easily just drive with it being faulty. What will happen though is it will stop sending the proper shift signals to the tranny. It will then destroy the clutch packs and you will either have to do a tranny rebuild or get a new tranny all together. I really didnt have the 500 bucks for this part but i really dont have the money for a new tranny. I guess im just spending some money to save some money. My mods will have to wait for now though...damnit

Just an FYI for anyone considering ordering this part - 68004143AF is only for 2005-2007 models with the NAG1 transmission/Quadra-Trac. There are different part numbers for other applications.

Additional information:

Tech Tip Part Description: Gear shift mechanism (WK/XK)

Tech Tip Description: If you have a binding or broken upper bezel, or a concern with the electronic shifter module (ESM), It is no longer necessary to replace the complete transmission shifter as an assembly. Please refer to Service Bulletin 21-016-06 issued July 2006 that provides a serviceable top PRND bezel part numbers for the shifter assembly. The ESM comes with this bezel assembly.. Please review the following recommendations for common bezel/shifter concerns:

(1)Shifter loss of comm DTC U0103. If you are replacing a component for a stored U0103 Loss of communication with ESM in a 2007MY product, insure that the FCM is flashed to 04692138AG or greater. If not download the 04692138AG FCM flash from DealerCONNECT. After the flash has completed clear all codes and verify U0103 DTC does not return, if it does not, shifter replacement is not necessary, if it does return proceed to step 2. CAUTION: The FCM software does not support module “abort - recovery” mode. If the FCM reprogramming (flash) process is interrupted the FCM cannot be saved, and will require FCM replacement.

(2) Only U codes U0103 or U0404 can indicate potential ESM issues. If either is present make sure the ESM connector was secure before replacing top PRNDL bezel only (for the WK/XK NAG1 transmission, the ESM module is part of the upper bezel assembly). Follow procedures in TSB 21-016-06 for upper bezel replacement. Other U codes indicate issues outside of the ESM/Shifter assembly, therefore, do not replace Bezel or Shifter assembly.

(3). If fault code P0607 is present, clear the code, cycle shifter from Park to Drive to Park 3 times. If P code re-appears replace top PRNDL bezel only, the ESM is part of this bezel (TSB 21-016-06). If P code does not re-appear, do not replace any Shifter components.

(4) If slider is binding, or PRNDL illumination issues, replace top PRND bezel only - do not replace the entire shifter assembly.

Re: HOW TO: Change out PRND Bezel/Gear Shift

Is this part number (68004143AF) the top PRND bezel or the whole assembly? From how easy it was to change out, im assuming it was the top bezel only.

I was unaware there were different parts for different years. If i would have know I would have put that in the original write up. Thanks for the info! The first diagnostic I had done at the dealership actually went through these steps all with no luck. After that I cleaned it like rob recommended. Still no luck.

Here are all of the shifter bezel part numbers. Somewhat confusing trying to figure them all out. What I'm not sure about is why the prices vary so much. At first I thought it was because some of the bezels included the ESM (electronic shifter module). But the TSB part numbers ("suffix AC") include the ESM and are much cheaper than the superseding part numbers (suffixes "AE" and "AF"). And, there are different part numbers for the shifter assembly - which includes the assembly and gearshift knob, but not the upper bezel.

It appears that you can no longer order the cheaper "AC" parts from the TSB, they show zero stock while the newer AE and AF bezels show plenty of stock.

2005-2007 WK/WH/XK/XH

68004143AF, bezel top assembly (2005-2007 WK with A580 trans and without t-case switch) $747.00 MSRP/$448.00 dealer.

68004144AF, bezel top assembly (2005-2007 WK with A580 trans and with t-case switch) $649 MSRP/$380.00 dealer.

68004145AE, bezel top assembly (2005-2007 WK with 545RFE trans and without t-case switch) $126.00 MSRP/$75.15 dealer.

68004146AE, bezel top assembly (2005-2007 WK with 545RFE trans and with t-case switch) $126 MSRP/$75.15 dealer.
