So i keep reading threads where a front end mod needs to be done but noone wants to remove the front bumper cover because its time consuming or too complicated.

Well its not that hard so i figure i will doa quick little write up and maybe we can sticky it.

1st Pop the hood open.

2nd Remove all 6 push pin connectors that hold the grille in place. They remove by using a flat blade screwdriver, pop up the center "button" and then pop out the whole clip.

3rd Carefully remove the grille. Tilt it towards your self to release the lower clips.

4th On each wheel well there is 2 plastic rivets. cut them off with a pair of cutters or carefully with a knife. These can be replaced with more rivets found on ebay or justforjeeps.com. BUT you can also replace these with the same large push pins that are used to hold the grille in place if you plan to remove the bumper cover on a regular basis.

5th At the seam of the bumper and the front fender there is a small hex hed screw. I think its a 7mm or 8mm but i may be wrong. Get a 1/4" rachet and the right size socket and remove the screw. its screws in to a plastic tab thats pressend in the fender.

6th At the front of the bumper sit down and look under the jeep by the air dam. (on 05 to 07 models) there are some hand twist off screws to losen. Losen each one, then gently pull the air dam forward and down and set aside.

7th Behind the air dam is the front Cross member. there are 3 10mm bolts that hold the bottom of the bumper cover to the x member. remove them.

8th If you have fog lights, reach under the bumper cover and un plug each fog light.

9th At the center of the bumper, where the grille snaps in there are 4 smaller push pins. remove them like the grille push pins.

10th gently un snap the front bumper on each side, there is a little tab under the headlight that holds it tight. be careful removing the bumper cover as it can easily scratch the fenders near the side markers if you are not gentle. the rest should come off easily.

Installation is the reverse.

It sounds like alot of work, but once you have done it for the first time, it takes maybe 10 mins to remove and reinstall it. Its really easy to do. Dont be afraid.

Re: Front Bumper cover removal

the airbag sensor is pretty much a shock sensor...so i would say it would take a lot of force to set it off. I havent seen the sensor and I've had my bumper off many times...so i would assume tyou are safe unless your doing something with the front frame rail or something crazy like that

No shock sensors to worry about on the WK (when removing the front bumper cover). I'm not sure where the sensors are located, but I cut out my front crossmember and replaced it with a winch plate and never found anything scary in there.

you should also add the rivet setter and proper rivets to be used when removal/replacing the front cover. I believe the rivet Mopar part # is 92006911 or something like that.

Anyone know if the plastic insert in the fender that the screw in the wheel well goes to can be had separately ?
