Re: How To: Install a mesh grill on a 08 WK

lol, thanks fellas! nothing major, just wanted to get rid of the "smilie" look the overland trim have against the black grill. Simple task, tape off area i didnt want paint, sand, basecoat and clearcoat. Hardest part was getting the look of the trim to "curve" in with the tape. ill try to get some today from diff angles.

Dave, I was looking at the startech site earlier, What do you think about this? LED strip near bottom fog. If you can get the same looking one, I think it will look fresh.

Tried to replicate the '11 Summit grill on my '05 Limited. Diamond openings are a bit smaller (~3/4") but I'm still pleased overall with how it turned out. Mesh is aluminum woven wire, diamond pattern.

It is just a straight aluminum wire woven 12"x48" piece of mesh from
CustomCarGrills.com. I thought about doing a clear coat finish for a protective layer but Matt from CCG assured me it wouldn't rust so I left it alone. Cost me $59 shipped, but Matt is offering me a partial refund if I submit a write-up and pictures so I'll be doing that later today. I told him there might be some interest from this forum so I'll ask him about discounts and/or group-buys when I send him the write-up. I had about a 12"x12" left over piece along with some scrap but unfortunately not enough to do the lower valance as I am thinking about doing as well. Here's another picture in the "daylight" (gloomy rainy overcast) as it seems like the sun hasn't been out here for months.

Re: How To: Install a mesh grill on a 08 WK

Its about time that I contributed to the information that I have found so valuable. Big thanks to 08Hemi for all the guidance. You will see your writeup in the background pictured below.

What I started with:
1.jpg

08Hemi- Imitation is the greatest form of flatery
2.jpg

Measuring out an approx piece of cardboard to make a template. You can see the mesh in the background. It came from McNichols, $58 shipped for a 3'x4' piece of Aluminum woven wire mesh. 2 squares per inch.
3.jpg

Quick cardboard template. To begin with, I anticipated using those tabs sticking up that are part of the chrome. Later saw that they served no purpose, other than to get in my way and to be one more thing to trim the mesh around. Later cut them off...

**Edit- Do not cut off the black plastic pieces on the bottom. These hold the entire gille on the jeep. I am refering to the chrome tabs you see sticking out of the cardboard on the top**
4.jpg

Cut out the mesh per the template. Did it on a 45 degree angle for the desired diamond patern. Notice I had to use the tool box for weight because the mesh wanted to roll bck up from shipping.
5.jpg

Let the mesh sit overnight under a lot of weight. The toolbox is probably about 75lbs.
6.jpg

For cutting out the old plastic grille I used a dremel. Not your typical rotary dremel. It worked perfectly.
7.jpg

Guess what this is for? JB Weld. About $5 from Lowe's or Home Depot
8.jpg

I was concerned about the potential of the mesh not lying flat on the concave grille. Used the JB weld to secure some stainless bolts. then used stainless fender washers and nylon locking nuts.
9.jpg

Another pic with all of the bolts glued in:
10.jpg

Just hit the 10 picture max. The results below...
