How To: Install Interior LED Lights (a pictorial guide)

I decided to post a few pics on how to take off the button light covers to install the interior LED's. I got a email from Frankie asking about what I had received in my kit and if it was correct. It was a bit tricky with the removal but i have included some pics to kinda show how this is removed. Unfortunately I do not have any WJ info at this time or for other Jeep models at this point.

I hope this helps.

You will need a cheap set of jewelry screwdrivers (flathead really)

Insert the screwdriver here, push toward the windshield and pull down on the lens as there is a plastic tab that you have to "release" You have to give it some force, but it seems to be quite strong plastic so i would not worry about breaking it.

Now that the lens is off, there is a metal light deflector, pull it straight out.

When taking out stock bulbs they will be hot as hell FYI!

Take out old put in new!

You can choose to put in light deflectors back in if you want to. I left mine off. It is brighter without them.

Do the same with the rear courtesy lights.

As far as the footwells, liftgate, licenseplate, and glove box its a bit more self explanitory.

Footwells: pop off the white lens cover to get at the bulb...
I left the light covers off the foot well lights as when they are on it really makes them dark too.

License Plate: Push on tab to the left or right to release and pull down.

Just pull out the incandescent bulbs and pop in the new LED bulbs. This was a bit tricky though. Mine were rather tight in the socket and you may need to use needle-nose pliers to grip and wiggle out the incandescent bulbs. You obviously do not want to grip too hard as they are glass and they might break in the socket. Be careful but just be patient.

All said and done...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have some before and after pictures here of them. The low-light picture taking is not that great but hope you all get the idea of the difference in looks. Ill get better pics one day.

Re: How To: Install Interior LED Lights (a pictorial guide)

wheres the cargo light install??? I still have the cover off mine. would of been nice to know that the panel needs to be removed to snap the cover back on since the bulb housing floats around back there.

Nice write-up w/pix. Ive changed out my lights trying all diff leds im able to use my finger to pry the covers off they are so flexed already. i def recommend the 1 watt T10 leds from warden_jp on ebay, and the 1 watt flank style for the licence plate and rear doors. For my cargo light I put an 18smt tower on a T10 base and it is insanely bright, but it sticks out too far to put the lens back on. oh well.

Re: How To: Install Interior LED Lights (a pictorial guide)

I'm looking to order LED's tonight, and I'm just wanting to verify what bulbs I need.

What I know so far:

2 168 bulbs for the license plate
2 3157 bulbs for the reverse lights
2 906 bulbs for under the dash (courtesy lights)
2 578 bulbs for front dome lamps
1 194 bulb for the glove box

What I am not sure of:
Cargo area bulb
Rear courtesy bulbs

Thanks!

Sorry for not having the cargo how to on there. It is a pita to remove the panel though to properly install it. I might edit it to include the install however.

You can use the 194 or the 906 for the rear courtesy and the cargo area. I use 194's just because at that time its what i had ordered back when.

Re: How To: Install Interior LED Lights (a pictorial guide)

Are any resistors required? I was noticing that for tail light LED's you need to install resistors...not the same for interior LED's? Is that b/c it is such low power/wattage? Are there any downsides? I REALLY like they way they look

Re: How To: Install Interior LED Lights (a pictorial guide)

For the interiors, the thing is that you will get a 10% glow when you install regular set of led lights. If you are going to use them you can leave in a regular incancescent bulb in order to alleviate this issue. I personally like the 10% glow.
