Yea it wasnt too difficult at all. I would say the hardest part is getting the clip off and back on to the rod that opens the door. they are clipped on there pretty tight and you dont have a lot of room to work with your hands!

Re: How To: Install Painted Door Handles

Nice writeup. For the driver's front door, does the lock cylinder swap easily from the old handles to the new? Or do the new ones come already keyed to your car?

from doing this in other cars, you would have to switch the lock. but has anyone ever even used it on their wk? its kind of useless because it sets the alarm off and disengages the vehicle.

the new handles do not come with a new lock cylinder. It is a very easy swap.

Re: How To: Install Painted Door Handles

, just did the handle swap myself on sunday. easy as pie. once the handle is unbolted from the door, the lock cylinder is loose. the lock cylinder just pops right out and drops into the new handle.

Re: How To: Install Painted Door Handles

Great write up. Thanks for the great pictures also. I will be looking forward to doing the chrome moldings also. Help me a lot when it came to doing the front doors, the rear where easy.

Thanks again

Re: How To: Install Painted Door Handles

Thanks for the writeup on this, it helped me tremendously. You're definitely right about the hardest part being the clips that connected the door rod to the handle. Holy smokes I battled with those. The window rail is kinda in the way on the rear doors as well, but they can be worked around. They limit the amount of access you have to the clips in the rear doors. I'm right-handed, so re-attaching the clip on the rear passenger door was a lot fun.

"Easy as pie" is not a phrase I would use to describe the whole process. It took me a solid 2.5 hours, and there are some frustrating parts to it. I needed a longer ratchet extension for sure, but got it done with what I had. Those clips though..... And there's two of 'em on the driver's side front door. All in all, it's an at-home in-the-driveway job for sure. But get a long ratchet extension, some extra yellow door trim attachment clamps, maybe a trim removal tool set (mine came in handy), and enough time to get it done. I really like the final product, it improves the appearance of the exterior by quite a lot.

Nice write up! I am totally doing this, I hate the rough plastic handles!
