Re: How to open up OEM HID headlight housings to paint the bezels

OK I've got the oven preheating as I type. Got some questions though. What exactly do I have to remove before heating?
I can seem to figure out how to get the leveling sensor out.
Do I keep the big rubber ring around the high beam on? That seems like it would melt.
I've got most of the harness off expect for one black wire that goes into a small hole underneath the high beam hole. It goes into a black rubber plug and when I pull that out the wire just keeps going into the lights.
What about the silver braided wire that goes into the HID bulb? I can't seem to figure how to get that out. Thanks.

hope you figured it out by now..but if not. ill answer a couple parts. the rubber ring will not melt and does not need to come off to remove lens but you should anyway. just pops off. the silver braided wire is just the covering over the HID harness to the d2s bulb. that twists off of the bulb in the projector. and the other end unclips from the ballast.

Re: How to open up OEM HID headlight housings to paint the bezels

Before anyone decides to do this I would recommend you think twice. Just got finished ruining a passenger side OEM HID headlight. I have much respect for anyone who can open them, because I don't see how its possible without doing significant damage to the assembly. Here are some quick pics I took of the damage before I just gave up.

There were little chips of plastic all over the counter top. At the end when I ruined them I just went to town to try and see if I could win the battle at the end. I still failed. Guess I might sell my driver side one and go with the projector retrofit now since I hear the aftermarket lights are butter to open.

Re: How to open up OEM HID headlight housings to paint the bezels

bummer, go take a bat to it and smash the piss out of it to feel better, I have a spare OEM projector (passenger) might give it a go and see what it takes to do it. Couldn't you in theory just cut the back of the housing off, do what you need to do, & plastic weld it back up?

Re: How to open up OEM HID headlight housings to paint the bezels

You didnt ruin them, Thats what they all look like, its a matter of finding the right tool to use when prying, you need to heat them back up and start from the inside lower corner.. once you get your tool of choice under the lends its self and get some leverage you will see it separating from the housing...

Then once you get them disassembled reheat the housing again peal out the rest of the Goo, and you can literally pinch the plastic back into place with your fingers, just be sure when you are prying you don't crack that lip that you will be filling with silicone to reseal the len's... Trust me dude my lights were way worse then that cause I bought mine from a salvage yard and mine work flawlessly now.. I had to repair holes in my housings.

The only reason the pictures look like that is cause the plastic was hott you were prying and it cooled down and stayed in that form, if you reheat it and use some clips it will take its shape back.. the spot you need to be most carful is the outside top corners where the side market is, get the entire lens loose from the housing expect for that corner then heat it back up for a few min and work that corner very slowly..

If you look back through this to my posts when I did mine I took a pic of the tool I used that worked amazingly.

Re: How to open up OEM HID headlight housings to paint the bezels

Well it has been a few months since I have posted on thsi subject. It was worth the wait.

And the side markers

Now for those of you that are thinking of doing this, I used 3M Window Weld to reseal. But I did not use the strip I used the urathane(sp?) that came in a tube and it was a damn good thing I did. Why, you ask? I put the projector lens' in upside down. I will get get day time pics soon. Working midnights is a bitch but leaves greta time for forums.
