Re: How to open up OEM HID headlight housings to paint the bezels

I have the black rubber type of sealant and I cannot get my housing to open. I even tried 300 degrees in the oven. I've chipped the lens, cracked the housing, melted a tab, cracked a tab, scraped a knuckle, burnt a towel...they are not opening. I made some progress in one area, but it will not keep going. I am basically ruining a passenger headlight assembly. What kind of chisel are you guys using? Just a regular wood chisel? It seems too thick, not to mention there isn't a good place to pry. I am fairly competent, but this is simply not working.

Re: How to open up OEM HID headlight housings to paint the bezels

Right when you're about to give up you have to keep going. I just used some cheap wood chisels from Harbor Freight . The wider ones give you more twisting leverage and seem to chew up the housings less when prying. Start on the side of the headlight thats closest to/under the grill, you'll be able to fit the chisel in the seam.

Re: How to open up OEM HID headlight housings to paint the bezels

I can see some areas around the little clips that have excess black stuff there. There is also an area between the lens and the housing where I can see something "oozed" out. However, I have baked for 15 minutes at 230 and nothing... 5 minutes at 300. That chisel set it basically what I have, 1" is the widest.

I will try on the driver's side housing another time, but the passenger one is just getting maimed right now. Its fixable since you won't be able to see the damage, but its going to take some extra work to make sure its water tight...if I ever get it open.

The black stuff, is it soft and rubbery or hard like plastic?
