Re: How to open up OEM HID headlight housings to paint the bezels

lolz-im stubborn, im sure ill have a mini heart attack upon getting frustrated with the removal process.. hahhaha

i think ill do my standard housing set first to see how it goes before i touch my OEM HID one.dont want to ruin a 300 dollar lite

so basically at my house i have this lying around..

4 OEM Standard housings (one set off my 2010 and one used set of a 08 junker)
1 OEM HID housing-

gonna be a fun winter, thanks jdubz

Re: How to open up OEM HID headlight housings to paint the bezels

haha yeah at one point one of my headlights got me so frustrated I wanted to smash it so I just stepped away, took a break, cooled off then came back fresh.

It is a perfect winter project. I did mine when I was snowed in for a week from like 3' of snow lol

Re: How to open up OEM HID headlight housings to paint the bezels

Wow...I got them both opened up. The passenger side has three cracks in the channel on the housing. One part of it actually came completely off so I hope some epoxy on the cracks and replacing that one part will still give me a good seal when I am done. The driver's side lens went soooo much smoother. Just a small little piece cracked off, not even the size of a fingernail.

The trick on the second housing was simply experience and PATIENCE. I bought a few extra tools for the job: a new flat blade 1/4x6" screw driver, 1-1/2" solid putty knife (a quality one) and a 1-1/2" chisel that was much slimmer than the cheap set of chisels I bought earlier. I baked it at 230 for about 15 minutes and started in the bottom corner by the grill (as suggested) with the screw driver first. Once it opened up a bit I used a combination of the chisel and the putty knife. You can see the sealant giving way like JDubya explained. Once that stopped showing signs of progress or too much force was needed they went back in the oven. I worked all along the bottom edge switching among the three tools all the way to the amber reflector and then started up the side by the grill. I reheated it probably 10 times but patience and persistence paid off. Honestly, it wasn't "hard," just very time consuming. Oh, and the side by the amber reflector is the worst part to open. The sealant is really caked in there and its hard to get anything under the lens. Finally, these things are ready for the next step. I spent 4 hours on them tonight, not to mention the other 3 or so hours working on that passenger side lamp.

I almost want another passenger side housing so I can redo it. But I think some epoxy and some TLC will yield sufficient results.

Thank you for all the tips and support. It can be done!

Re: How to open up OEM HID headlight housings to paint the bezels

Congrats! The end result will be worth all the time and trouble it took. Welcome to the club

Do you plan on painting the bezels black or something else?

I'm unsure on that at the moment. With it being a silver Jeep I don't know if I even want to mess with painting the chrome silver...seems redundant. Black is really my only other option, but I'm not sure if it would look like the Jeep had two black eyes.

Do you have any other chrome on the Jeep? What color are your wheels?

Thanks Scott, that looks better than I thought. I'm not going to leave them chrome anymore...that's officially decided as of right now!

I think you might be on to something with the wheels comment. I just have stock rocky mountain edition wheels. They are like a chrome-ish with dark metallic gray accents. I'm contemplating a color match on the dark metallic gray for the bezels. I'll search O'Reillys tomorrow for a good color if I don't just go BSM. I have no chrome anywhere else.

Gunmetal might look good. Sometimes black headlight bezels on light colored vehicles can make it look like a raccoon. Something between body-matched silver and a darker grey would probably look sweet though.
