Do what, remove the roof rails and use the plastic plugs in the fastener holes? If so, be sure to squeeze enough silicone sealant down into the holes to fill them, then insert the plugs down into them. Wipe off any access sealant that oozes out. At first I had water leaking into the car on the drivers side pillar before so I removed both plastic plugs and used more sealant and inserted new plugs, and has been leak free ever since. I guess the first time I didnt use enough sealant and water got into the holes.

Re: How to remove roof rack/crossbars

Roof racks are for hillbillys and grandma's. What do people need roof racks for, other than making a whistling noise on the highway. Removing the racks increases your mileage by 2-3mpg.

Re: How to remove roof rack/crossbars

Sorry to bump an old thread but I was wondering if this is the same scenario for the WJ. Anyone input is welcome. Thanks in advance.

Re: How to remove roof rack/crossbars

I removed my cross bars by removing the torx screws on the front brackets. The only problem is there may be times you need to put them back. (i.e.- christmas tree)
If you want to make them so you can easily add and remove try this.
Drill the plastic clamp with a small drill bit so you can push the metal pin.

Hope this helps someone else out.

Re: How to remove roof rack/crossbars

It just so happens, however, that the claim above is true, and the result of one of the easiest things you can do to reduce emissions on a day-to-day basis: remove your roof rack when you’re not using it, and use it only when really needed. This is how the rack is mounted. Studs are welded to the roof braces and poke up through holes in the roof skin. To take them off the holes have to be welded up. cutting off and using filler does not work well at all. The roof panel is too flexible.

Re: How to remove roof rack/crossbars

Bumping an old thread to confirm that the roof rails the 2 on each side of the jeep can be removed with the screwdriver? I'm not talking about the cross tails that go across the rails. Someone please confirm so I can install my new chrome rails I bought. Thanks in advance!
