Re: How to: Remove roof rack crossbars on WK

Sorry for the bump..

But those plastic end caps are on very tight. I'm squeezing the hell out of it, but they will not lift up!

Ideas?

Re: How to: Remove roof rack crossbars on WK

Hey You guys, SUPER EASY way to remove those cross bars!!

-Yes, it is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to remove those darn pins using regular pliers!...
-Yes, you can go through the hassle of taking off the "Runner Rails"..But this takes "a lot" of time!

SOLUTION: Use a pair of LOCKING PLIERS (Vise Grips)! Once you get them calibrated to where you need them its as simple as pulling out the pins. I just did this on my 2006 GC.

NOTE: Being the engineering student that I am, I figured I may just be able to knock the pin inwards with the logic that maybe its just a short pin and would fall out the other side. THIS DOES NOT WORK. The pin is "Full Length" and runs from that portion you see sticking out all the way through to the other side.

Second Note: If you knocked one pin inside enough that there is no possible way to grab it, don't panic. As long as you haven't done the to the other side, once you remove the "Good pin" using the method above, angle the cross bar up while wiggling and finiking with the bracket and it will come right off......To Remove that pin you may have pounded in, take the same pair of locking pliers, clamp a section of pin perpendicularly (from the underside of the cross bar ) and take a hammer and slightly tap/pound the pliers in the direction towards the opening in the cross bar where the pin enters.

If you've pounded both pins in on a cross bar the only way to remove the cross bar is to remove the torx screws holding down the "Runner Rail".

All you need to do is loosen the main knob and pull the stainless steal pins out from the side... Done... its off

Re: How to: Remove roof rack crossbars on WK

This writeup is another example of the wrong way to do things, of which there are many on this site posted. You just remove the knob, push one side frontwards, the other backwards, push the rail into one side, and it pops right out of the other side. Took me 5 minutes total to remove both cross rails. Removing the end caps is not needed or is it wise, as they are not designed to be removed; the seals can leak water.
