How To: Swap out SRT8 Mesh w/Laredo Grill Trim

I wrote about this before, one of my first mods I ever did to my 05 WK. I found an SRT8 grill on ebay dirt cheap but it was red, and I have a black WK. So I bought it and swapped out my black trim with the srt8 mesh. Was easy to do. I soaked both grills in really hott water in my bath tub to soften the plastic tabs first.

Stock SRT8 grill I bought.

Locate the small plastic tabs on the back side of the grill. Using a small flat head screw driver I unhooked all the tabs along the top and bottom of the grills. These tabs seemed to pop out easy and stayed unhooked.

Next, working from one side I popped out the tabs along the vertical sections of the grill, carefully pulling the trim off the mesh to keep the tabs from clicking back into place. Here is where an extra set of hands would of helped, but I was able to do it on my own. Take your time with it and you wont break any tabs, I didnt but came close to.

Plastic tab on the trim piece.

Trim removed from the back sides of the grills.

Install the trim just by snapping the tabs back on. Easy to do. Grill is finished.

Re: How To: Swap out SRT8 Mesh w/Laredo Grill Trim

I got lucky and figured how to do it, there was no info I could find at the time if swapping just the trim was possible or i'd have to have the srt grill painted. Im cheap, I got that red srt grill for $85 shipped on ebay, then sold my slotted backing with the red trim back on ebay for $55-$65 I wanna say. Just happy if someone gets ideas from my write-up. Even though its just a grill, I think the mesh makes the WK look that much nicer. Even the "homemade" mesh I have seen installed by some people on here look awesome IMO.

Re: How To: Swap out SRT8 Mesh w/Laredo Grill Trim

Not trying to be an ass......becasue this is a great write up that =no one had done prior to now. But people have been switching the painted grill over to the mesh since the SRT was released in 2006. My first SRT grill I did that way. I bought a Black SRT grille when the racemesh grille craze hit the red site and switched them over. I was the first on SJ I believe and did a write up without pics. I have no idea why it cant be found. I guess a lot of info was lost when SJ went to the VBulletin software in 2007. I know I lost about 50% of my posts and even lost my username. Thats why you will still find some of my posts under my username at SJ. I think Nick found a few of them and returned them to the database.

Re: How To: Swap out SRT8 Mesh w/Laredo Grill Trim

^^^HUH. Ok, sorry Mr Scott, I guess I was just a moron in my searching to see if it could be done. All I know is when I saw that red srt grill on ebay I got excited and searched around to see if the trim was in fact two pieces. What I did do was go out to my car and remove the grill, noticed there were tabs all around it and was able to snap one of them free, so I put it back together, bought the srt grill and experimented with it and it worked. No Scott, your not an ass, and I will gladly change my first post to include in huge letters that you were the first to ever do this mod. OK?

I honestly think the kid selling it didnt know what it was really worth. It was in an auction style thing and also had a buy it now for $85 shipped, so I said screw it and bought it right away. I wasnt about to pass it up knowing what they go for. I really think I just got lucky finding that deal. I never go on ebay looking for something specific, I learned to just take my time and keep looking. At the time I wasnt even looking for the grill, I happen to see it cheap just searching thru 05 grand cherokee items.
