Oil Filter size?

So I will be doing oil and filter shortly- I used to use a longer size filter (Fram) in my 01 GC Larado for a bit more fluid and filter capacity. Is there room to use a longer filter in my 07 GC Hemi? I wont be using Fram by the way in this ride, although I never had any issues with them before.

Sorry, I don't have a direct answer for you. There is room in my '08 for a slightly longer filter.

However, I'm curious why you want more capacity. The 5.7L HEMI lube oil capacity is already 7 qts. A longer filter might give you an addl. 1/2 pint.

I would submit that a good oil filter with an anti-drainback valve feature is the best choice. Minimizes the time (after engine start) that it takes for lube oil pressure/flow to reach the upper oil gallery and lifters. Engine start is the biggest wear point for most internal combustion engines.

Re: Oil Filter size?

I have read where a larger filter would offer more filtering capacity, no doubt there is already sufficient oil volume in the engine, just curious to see if any had done this mod is all.

Re: Oil Filter size?

well, did the oil change and the napa brand ( Wix) filter I installed is half again as big around as the filter I removed- has to have more filter media.

I remembered that there was an oil filter change during the '07-'08 model year period. The threads are different (22mm vs. 3/4-16 UNF), so one will not fit from early-to-late model years. I have to double-check at the parts store to ensure they are providing the correct one. Look at http://www.wkjeeps.com/wk_maintenance.htm#ENGOIL for addl. info.

Re: Oil Filter size?

I used Fram filters on my 01 Jeep GC Laredo 6 cyl, it called for a Ph16 I believe but I ran a Ph8 with no issues- filter canister was about an inch longer, so what I read in a Mopar magazine suggested that it had more filter media. The Fram Ph16 is what my 07 GC Overland Hemi calls for- going to have Napa give me the same sized filter as I think the longer canister will fit right in.
