Scratch Removal and Light Repair Factory Stereo

So... I had an issue because I had this great idea to buy a factory radio off ebay that had an auxiliary port to install on my jeep. (I know pretty much everyone has done this). I found it online for $60 and it was described as in perfect condition. Well I got the thing in the mail and it looked like someone tried using the LCD as a touch screen with a key. Also went to install it and half of the light bulbs were burnt out.

I was so mad. I contacted the guy and he offered a refund if I shipped it back to him. Decided it wasn't worth the time or money to ship it back so I thought I would get creative. I will try to add pictures later if anyone is interested in more.

Problem 1- Scratched screen.
I picked up the meguiars headlight lens restore kit that comes with sand paper. Wet sanded it and buffed it out. It looks like brand new!! So if anyone has a scratched screen on there stock stereo this worked perfectly and only took me all of 10 minutes!

Problem 2- Light bulbs burned out.
So I saw a couple threads on people soldering in new 12v bulbs into there heating/air conditioning controls. So I removed the stereo popped off the face plate, and sure enough there where 4 bulbs not working. So I took off the face off my other deck heated up the solder on 4 bulbs that I knew worked and soldered them on to the new deck! It was a little hard because the bulbs were so small but it didn't take me to long and it works perfectly!

If anyone wants a further right up on this let me know. I was just excited that this issue was solved and for free with parts I had laying around the house! At the end of the day the Ebay seller refunded me $20 to compensate the scratch kit.

Now I need to find bulbs for my heater controls because ALL of the bulbs are out on it and unfortunately I don't have a spare one laying around. Has anyone played with putting colored LEDs in there instead?

I put blue LEDs in my jeep. Looks great. ImageUploadedByJeepGarage1429753696.394406.jpg I also put an extra two in and tossed out the clear plastic thing to guide the light.

Do you have any pictures of the finished product installed?

Scratch Removal and Light Repair Factory Stereo

ImageUploadedByJeepGarage1429780147.350253.jpgstill daylight out, but it looks really good. I ordered 360 view leds online for like $10 and got resistors from RadioShack (1/4 watt, 470 ohm is what I used). Make sure you don't get them backwards or you'll blow them. I want to do the gearshift ones next, then maybe the radio.

Yeah I really like the way they look. I was debating also on diving into the door switches as they don't light up any more. And lighting the door handles because no one can ever seem to find them. The bulbs in the radio were very easy so the led swap would be easy in the radio too.

How did you know which side to put the resistors on? I'd hate to have to blow bulbs to figure it out..

The LEDs will have a longer side, and a shorter side. The longer side is the positive, so you will want to attach it to that side (longer).

I pulled out the door lights to figure out what bulb to use. Let me know what bulbs you go with!

Also, what bulbs you used for the radio!

Did you use a testor to figure out what was positive on the radio? Or does it matter?

Yes you'll want to. If you put them backwards on your circuit board they won't turn on.

I believe it will just not turn on. When I wired mine for the first time, I had a couple backwards but they didn't blow.
