Wk front UCA ball joint removal replacement guide.

So, i couldn't find a good guide for changing the upper ball joints, i found allot of talk about the easy way to do it was changing out the whole arm, which is quite labourious.

So, first thing to do is jack up the Jeep and support it with a jack stand.

Leave the scissor jack in place and remove the wheel.

Clean area with wire brush and back the nut of, not all the way!

Now lower the scissor jack slighty the arm may fall of the ball joint under the spring pressure, mine did but i had it off recently to put new shocks in. lf yours does not you will need a pickle fork to get it off.

Use your ball joint press to get the old ball joint off, this is a cheap bit of kit from Princess auto and cost about $30 bucks, you will need a bar to get some torque to it.

insert new ball joint using same tool in reverse. Reassemble the parts in reverse, pay attention to aftermarket as you may have a grease nipple and a split pin in the castle nut.

****TIP**** some aftermarket ball joints have a cir-clip as shown, make sure you peel back the rubber boot and remove if you have it other wise you will never get it out.

These are the tools needed for the job, it took 45mins and was the first time i have done it, now i know what tools to use its a 30min job. lf you are capable of taking out the whole unit, you can do this. The cost of the tool and ball joint was about $65.

Nice write-up.

When I replaced mine, I did the whole assembly and it was certainly more of a pain than this looks like it would be.

Where did you buy just the ball joints? I might do this!

Also, just looked up that tool at princess auto and it's $100. HF has one for $73 before coupon...but I don't see any for anywhere near $30!

Re: Wk front UCA ball joint removal replacement guide.

Thanks, most helpful guide, for those needing a low cost fix. 3 out of 4 of my balljoints were bad by 100k, with little off road use. If you are keeping your WK for a while, replacing the entire control arm with an upgraded Moog professional arm (not the Moog R series) is the way to go; the OEM control arm bushings are also worn out and need replacing, the Moogs are a lot better design and last far longer than OEM. Probably the best handling upgrade I've done so far is front and rear upper and lower Moog arms, everything is so much tighter and solid.
