Check your idle pulley

Hey, just wanted to share my recent experience. My 2006 Commander had a idle pull failure. My was leaving the supermarket and noticed that the steering got real tight, but instead of pulling over and calling me, she continued to drive a couple of miles until the check engine light came on. Teaching her that, she pulled over and the coolant was steaming out. A good Samaritan stopped and helped and thought it was the serpentine belt.

After arriving, the belt looked ok and started to spin all of my pulleys. The idle pully was melted and deformed. Went to the local parts store picked one up and after jump starting, because of the battery drain noticed my radiator had blown out at the top. Limped home, and to make a long story short, ordered a new radiator online for $67 and picked up a customer returned battery at Auto zone for $49, a big H8, lol.

Did the install myself, dealership wanted more than $1200! All of this over a $12 plastic pully. Hope the information could help somebody.

Re: Check your idle pulley

The idler pulley bearing looses its grease over time and when left like that, will cease. Sometimes the belt will break, or the pulley will melt due to the friction of the slipping belt.
It is wise to remove the belt once in a while and check by hand if there is no noise coming from the pulley bearing. If you find the bearing dry and canīt get a new pulley soon, you can remove the bearing dust cap with a sharp knife and put some high heat grease in it, to prevent unpleasant surprises.

Re: Check your idle pulley

Good idea, Frank. That would probably be a good thing to add to a 30K inspection. Thanks for the heads up.
