2002 Liberty giving fits

2002 Jeep Liberty has been overheating faster n faster. First it took an hour or so then cool back down, now down to twenty min. The coolant reservoir was bubbling when it gets hot like the water is not allowed to circulate. I have noticed that there is the sound of water by the heater core when you first fire it up. Also I don't know if the thermostat is opening. Fan outside is coming on good. I really don't want to lean to blown head gasket , I also hear a light tick or knocking sound coming out the exhaust which might be believable if the water pump sounding noisy which it is. Just so much at once.
