I have the option to buy a 2006 CRD with 160k miles on it. I've never owned a diesel or know anyone who has in this size vehicle. They are asking 7500 but it blue books for between 6000 and 7000. I know the Liberty as a whole is a great vehicle. My question is about the miles on the engine. I know diesels last longer but I want opinions based on personal experience with this engine. I will be putting my wife in the vehicle.
I have a 05 kj crd and a few cautions for you. The egr is a big problem. It needs to be deleted or serviced often or electronically bypassed. Mine clogged and cost thousands in damage. I have the Green Diesel Engineering "eco tune" to defend my engine against further emissions systems assaults. Also, the timing belt & water pump should have been serviced at 100k miles. Also, any 160k old automatic transmission will likely need work, so I would look into that. I'd start at $5000 and negotiate from there. Wouldn't pay more than $6k, and I'd want the leather interior and cruise control.
Thanks for the advice. The guy is taking it to a mechanic to get it checked out this week. Hopefully, he and the mechanic are both honest. How did you go about getting the Green Diesel Engineering tune? Did you have to send the vehicle to them?
