Programming new FOBs

So I got my 06 KJ a few weeks ago with just one key/remote. Need to get some extras, so I ordered a couple of blank keys with RFID and remotes from ebay. I know I will need to go to a locksmith or dealer to get the RFID part of the key programmed (at least for 1 of them), but I thought before that I should be able to program the remote head on these keys myself. I have the one working remote. Should have been a snap, but I have been unable to do it.

Basically I have tried the instructions in the owners manual (and repeated many places online): Turn on car but don't start. When chimes stop press unlock on the working remote for 4-10 sec. While still holding unlock down press panic too for 1 sec. Release both together (you may or may not get a chime). You should now be in program mode. For each remote press Unlock and lock together for 1 sec, then release. Press unlock on that same remote. You should hear a chime indicating it is added. Repeat last two steps for each remote. Turn off car.

Well I must have tried over a dozen times, and it would seem that I can never get it into programming mode. Never hear a chime. None of the remotes get programmed. Even if I don't hit buttons on the working remote it still works later, which if I had gotten into programming mode it wouldn't.

So I'm pretty much at a loss. Why won't my KJ go into programming mode on the remotes? My original remote works just fine, all the buttons buttons seem to xmit just fine and the truck receives them. and so it should work to put it into program mode; but doesn't.

Any ideas here? I was wondering if perhaps there is some other sequence I could try for programming the remotes? Is it possible that the dealer might have locked the remote programming? What the heck is going on here???

Re: Programming new FOBs

You need TWO keys in order to get into programming mode. That's only for programming a 3rd key.

That's not what the owners manual says, nor the online instructions I see when I search for this. Care to explain? What sequence are you referring to?

Re: Programming new FOBs

I'm referring to the DIY programming sequence. You need both keys to program extras. You can program up to 8.

Insert key 1, turn to on. Leave it on for 10 seconds.
Turn the ignition off.
Insert key 2, turn to on, Leave it on for 10 seconds. Now the Sentry Key light (red dot) should start flashing. You are now in programming mode.
Insert key 3, turn to on. When this key is programmed, you will hear a ding. All 3 should start the vehicle after this.

You cannot do it without 2 keys. You have to go to the dealer.

Re: Programming new FOBs

Yeah, that's the sequence for programming the RFID to get the keys to run the engine.

What I am trying to do is program the remote part of the keys to lock/unlock the doors. For that you only need one working remote. I wanted to get the remote working on these ebay keys before I got them cut and couldn't return them.

Ah, I guess I misunderstood. I need to stop posting as soon as I wake up. I do remember this from my '06 KJ's manual, but I swear, SOMEWHERE in there, it says that you need keys. Not just one...

I know I read that. Even if it's NOT in that section, you need at least two keys to do this, dude.
