Renegade 2005 - Loose steering??

Hi all! I got my first jeep in April after my car was totaled after a altercation with a cow in the middle of the night. Today, I was driving Francis (my Jeep) to work. The highway to my job has no shoulders and it's not uncommon for anyone to accidentally slide of the road a teensy bit. However, today, going between 65 and 70 mph, one of my wheels got caught off the road and I could NOT get control of my jeep. This has happened before when driving my previous car, but I've never completely lost control of my vehicle. I was all over the road, trying desperately to slow down and get back in my lane. Long story short: I've been really anxious driving since my accident with that cow and today just drove my anxiety WAY up because of the temporary loss of control. Honestly, if there had been a person in the opposite lane, I would have been in an accident.

So, my question is: has anyone had this problem with loose steering? I was trying to way overcompensate trying to get my jeep back going straight (I know what you're thinking: that's probably why you were swerving. It's hard to explain, but that wasn't why I was swerving.) My dad has noticed it shakes quite a bit too. Is this normal for a jeep or??? I'm not quite sure what to do. I love jeeps, but I want to be safe too.

+E.

Do you have a lift or stock? How many miles on the Jeep?

Is the shaking a back and forth shimmy? All the time or only in certain conditions? What do you mean by loss of control? Is the Jeep wandering back and forth with a lot of slop in the steering wheel?

It is recommended to brake the vehicle while still on the shoulder and slow way down before even attempting to get back on the road. You can lose control of any vehicle if you try to immediately jump it back onto the road.

It's a stock and it has 130,000 miles.

The shake is very slight and I think it's more of a back and forth shake, I think I've gotten used to it because I don't really notice it personally. But my Dad specifically brought it up when he drove it for a short while yesterday.

By "loss of control", I mean it wasn't responding to my steering and was swerving all over the road. I know this can happen to any vehicle if you try to jump back onto the road. I've had that happen before and that's not really what happened today. Today, granted the road kinda ends steep and maybe that could have been why I lost control - especially with me not being used to a vehicle so high off the ground. However, the steering is always loose seeming as in you have to turn more when you make a turn. And I have to really work on keeping the myself in the correct lane every time I drive. The steering is always everywhere, just not as severe as it happened today.

Re: Renegade 2005 - Loose steering??

That's not normal and your mileage is high enough that I would expect some worn out suspension and/or steering parts. Highly recommend a competent mechanic evaluate and replace the worn out parts and then get a good alignment. There's definitely a problem. You can expect some body roll in the curves due to the high center of gravity but your steering should be tight and precise. Not sports car tight but not dangerous like you're describing. Let us know what you find out. It's not a dealership job either, find a reputable independent mechanic or suspension/alignment shop and save some dollars. A good alignment shop can replace the parts and do the alignment all at the same place and time.
