Re: transmission problems

Did you check the fluid level/color/smell? The TCM (transmission control module) is seeing faults and puts the transmission in limp mode, just to protect the transmission for severe damage.
If fluid is ok, i would start by checking the electrical connector on the transmission solenoid pack. Moisture and/or corrosion of the pins can cause problems you have now. If no moisture or corrosion found, most probably the solenoid pack is faulty.

can you tell me where this is or point me in the right direction so i can see if i have or not.
as i say,it happened all at once i was comming home from work 1 moring & it jumped from 1 gear to the other, finally it got stuck like it is now till it warms up when its still cold i will have all gears when it warms up it has 1 & reverse only
i havnt drove it at all i go & crank it up let it sit in the yard & idle for a while,i dont trust it to drive anywhere actually

Re: transmission problems

also i have another little thing for you,i did some rountine stuff to it before all this happened,i found that it had that RED raditor fluid in it,not the green which the bottle was full of mud basically so i flushed it out several times short time after that i found on the drivers side on the grille, headlight had that mud color on it & found aleaking hose ,replaced it then after this it started doing the transmission thing,so now i suspect it might have got wet, when it gets daylight im going to see about this other stuff that you have mentioned

Re: transmission problems

I´m now a little confused on which transmission you have in your jeep. I was thinking it was the 42RLE, but i see now that your jeep is a 2002 model and the 42RLE came only in 2003. Do you know which transmission it has or can you see it on the type plate?

Re: transmission problems

I´m not completely sure, but it can be that you have the 45RFE transmission. Most probably it will be in third gear (limp mode)when you only have one forward gear left. This transmission has a large connector on the left side of the transmission, which connects to the solenoid block. Check this connector for moisture and/or corrosion and clean it well with contact spray. If that doesn´t help, most probably the solenoid block is the problem. But can you have a look at the transmission and see if you can find the placard with the transmission info, just to be sure it has the 45RFE?
All control solenoids and pressure switches (and reverse and park/neutral switch) are on this solenoid block. If you are a bit handy, you can change this block yourself, but the transmission pan must be opened and the valve body must be removed to get access to the solenoid block. If it comes that far, i can give you some tips on how to do it.

i had a 68 mustang that had transmission problems before i got it rebuilt, from what i saw on google this moring it doesnt look to hard to do,although i did see about a dozen differnt versions, some bad some not so bad,it just figuring out which one i have, then finding somebody with the parts around here who might have 1 of them is another thing, i looked that up today so far im batting 0 on that 1 & i found 1 place that has rebulid parts for them but not all of it

Re: transmission problems

The 45RFE transmission uses pressure switches in the solenoid block to monitor that the solenoids are working. If a solenoid doesn´t work, or if the pressure switch doesn´t work, the TCM will not use that clutch anymore. Since one clutch is used for several gears, you can loose several gears when only one solenoid stops working, but the TCM will go into LIMP mode and only use 3rd gear.
The label mentioning the transmission type sits most probably just under the large connector on the left side.
The solenoid can be found on e-bay or here: http://www.electricaladvantage.net/45rfe545rfe.aspx
The last works with new OEM parts for a good price. I bought my solenoid pack, speed sensors and line pressure sensor from them and i did like the attention they gave to my questions.
You would need also the updated TRS cam plate, which they sell as a kit. They also have the complete filter kit.
