Unhappy '01 Automatic Cherokee Sport

I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport Automatic, and lately when I'm parking, if I put the steering at full lock, the whole column shudders terribly, and sometimes it'll slip out of gear. Being an automatic, I have to put it in park and restart it. I've noticed it doing the shuddering when not at full lock as well, even when just doing tight turns at low speed. Any ideas? Also, I'm not stupid, I have it in 2WD all the time if I don't need the 4WD grip. Thanks!

Re: '01 Automatic Cherokee Sport

Welcome to the garage.
It will slip out of gear, like it goes into neutral? No check engine light on? Did you check for eventual fault codes set?
Does the jeep have any differential lock?

Re: '01 Automatic Cherokee Sport

It's like it slips into neutral, but the gear lever doesn't get moved. There is no check engine light, and no fault codes. I'm seriously stumped as to why it's happening, but I really don't want to go get it repaired, I'd rather do it myself. I have it in 2WD with no diff lock.
Thanks

Re: '01 Automatic Cherokee Sport

I would start checking the transmission fluid level and colour/smell. A too low level could cause slipping of clutches, which could burn the fluid. Was the fluid changed lately?

Re: '01 Automatic Cherokee Sport

I did recently replace it. So, I don't think that's the problem, any other ideas?

Re: '01 Automatic Cherokee Sport

How was the fluid looking when you replaced it? Did the problem exist before you changed the fluid? If not checked yet, i would have a look at the fluid level and color, even if it was changed recently. If something wrong is going on, the fluid can change rapidly.
