1996 XJ tranny issue

The AW4 in my 96 XJ will not shift into second gear. It shifts directly from first to third. Other than that the tranny works great. LOL. Any suggestions as to why and a possible solution besides a rebuild? I'm wondering possibly if it is a stuck solenoid. Thanks.

I donīt know this transmission, but it indeed could be a shift solenoid. See next link to the AW4 service manual. You can read it for free, or download it for some bucks: https://pt.scribd.com/doc/97292423/A...c-Transmission

Re: 1996 XJ tranny issue

I just finished replacing all three solenoids in my 96 AW4. The swap out is easy peasy. Getting there is a pain. Sounds simple enough, drop the pan remove and replace the solenoids then the filter then bolt it all back up. The difficulty is where the exhaust pipe bends near the front of the pan and the tranny cross support. I could not get the pan out without removing the cross support. Then to put the support back in, multiple jacks came in handy since it was just me doing it and the XJ was on jack stands. Not a lot of room under there to move around. Anyway, got it done and the tranny shifts like new.
