1999 Jeep 4.0 Overheated, then started ticking and missing

I recently "acquired" a 99' Cherokee. 4.0 Automatic. The guy I bought it from said it overheated died and now it will run but with a miss and it is ticking.

Update:

after checking the fluids and the mil codes I found that the # 3 cylinder has 30 lbs of compression. I may pull the valve cover tommorrow and see what's what. No oil in the water, and visa versa.

I, too have been bitten... I bought pretty much the same thing last winter, 1999 4.0 4x4 AT, "blown" engine. I doubt looking under the valve cover will tell you much. Mine got so hot the #1 piston started to come apart, welding aluminum onto the cylinder wall. That caused the wrist pin to oval out the hole in one side of the piston, which was where the "ticking" was coming from. I replaced #1 and #2, honed all 6, water pump, thermostat, and the hoses. The lower hose had a slit, which caused it to pee out all it's coolant. Whoever owned it before just didn't stop soon enough. Good luck!

There was a lot of stop leak in the radiator. I flushed it twice with industrial drain cleaner. The heater core was clogged. He said it overheated suddenly. After about a month of work I have sorted this thing out. I replaced the engine for fear that the block and head were warped I serviced the A/C myself, vacuumed and refilled. It will sit and run at 195 degrees all day long now with the a/c on.
