97 Cherokee axel in 98 grand cherokee?

The front axel in my 98 Grand Cherokee is bad, but I have a friend who has a wrecked 97 cherokee with a good front axel. Will I be able to swap the cherokee axel to my Grand Cherokee easily? Thanks

Re: 97 Cherokee axel in 98 grand cherokee?

i know this is over a month old but incase anyone else ever needs to know in the future i wont let it go unanswered...

Yes you can take and swap them out... as long as the gear ratio is the same... guess 3.55 in your ZJ and the XJ is probly a 3.55 as well though could be a 3.73 tow package... both are low pinion front axles... your better off finding one from a ABS 91-97 cherokee because they are high pinions and still a bolt in swap... your ZJ probly has ABS and in the XJ with ABS it means the larger 297 u joints... If you dont have ABS in your ZJ then just dont use it on the new axle...

im sure hes fixed by now but for future reference once again...

Re: 97 Cherokee axel in 98 grand cherokee?

sorry but some of that is not very accurate.

a 97 is still high pinion in a xj. no it wont fit unless the vehicle is lifted high. otherwise the pinion yoke will get really friendly with the exhaust.

00 and 01 are the low pinion xj's
