99 Cherokee hood problem

Hi,

I have a 99 Cherokee sport with a stuck hood. Tried pulling for all my might to open but cable is gone. Pulled off grill but that got me nowhere. Now I'm on the headlight assembly. but the corner bracket screws are a problem. I hear this is a common problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Rob

Yep! What you need to remove is that sloppy owner/operator unit! Your XJ needs a completely new one! I happen to have one compatible with that particular make/model! lol

Sorry, had to!
Seriously, I've done this on a few other cars, but never on a Cherokee. It was a matter of getting to the latch with a screwdriver or pick of some sort. My mechanic buddies kept old steel dental pics just for this. But if you can't get to the latch unit in the first place, I don't know.

Re: 99 Cherokee hood problem

Have you tried having someone else pull the latch to see if it still releases the hood. This happened on my last car and the spring mechanism was gone but the wire was still intact so it took two people to open the hood.... or a good wedging system under the latch handle.

Re: 99 Cherokee hood problem

pull the release, then bang on the center of the hood with your fist wrapped in a towel.

Re: 99 Cherokee hood problem

Mine would open, but not latch. The latch assemblies on the underside of the hood are stamped metal, and rust over the years. After you get it open and figure out the cable problem, be sure and douch them down good with WD40 or similar and get them working smoothly.

Re: 99 Cherokee hood problem

if you are still fighting this, you need to snake your hand up around the steering pump/airbox area. then while someone else is pushing down on the hood @ BOTH corners, try and release it with your fingers.
this is the only pic I have ,but look where the cable goes. the black screw towards the left of the bracket is the pivot and the cable connects @ the right side (in pic) get your finger in there and pull like crazy. someone pushing on the hood will ease the tension, but it still can be a bitch.
Hope that helps
