Hi All!-Lifter Question-New Member!!!

Hi all! I have owned Jeeps for 30 years. I wouldn't own anything else. Recently my Jeep has been making a loud ticking noise (louder than just the lifter that needs oil or before the Jeep warms up). Is there a quick/cheap fix for this problem or am I looking at replacing lifters? Heeelp! Thanks!

Re: Hi All!-Lifter Question-New Member!!!

Does it sound like a sewing machine? mine does time to time.
I use seafoam - 1/2 can or so, and let it run through for a while, then change the oil , usually clears it up..... if its sticky lifters. Ive chewed a 4L cam or 2, if its that you will have "glittery" oil.

How many miles does it have? is it fairly clean inside? I have one thats wearing the rockers a bit, pulled the vc to check and when I poured oil on the fulcrums, it quieted way down.

I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 straight 6 with 203,000 miles on it. I changed the oil yesterday and it quieted it down a little but the noise is still there. It sounds like a chain hitting the chain guard on a bicycle lol....

The sound changes with rpms. When putting foot on the gas, it is loud & then the noise softens up but it still sounds like a bicycle when the chain hits the chain guard.

Re: Hi All!-Lifter Question-New Member!!!

Well, from here it doesnt sound good.
these are very good for locating hard to find sounds:

the only thing popping into my head @ the moment is those later model 4.0's had a main girdle that had not-very-much clearance to the connecting rods and some crank areas.
I added one to my older '94 and had to clearance the crank some(casting flash mostly) I suppose if some bearings are getting loose it could be tapping it.
Wish I could be of more help.

Well, you haven't owned this one for 30 years. How long have you owned your 2000 Cherokee?

Major things to watch for...

1. Do not use a FRAM oil filter. Mopar, K&N, Mobil 1 or WIX are better choices. A malfunctioning anti-drain back valve will cause dry starts... But I didn't read you to say if was at first start or a persistent clatter. You also need to use oil with high ZDDP (zinc) content or you can get premature cam wear.

2. Head problems on the 2000-2001 model years. I don't think this is your problem, but you should do a Web search and maintain a close watch regarding the I-6 head issue.

Good luck.

.
