Owned both from brand new to 9 to 10 years old as daily drivers and put 310,000 to 330,000 kms on each. Neither engine ever needed a quart of oil between changes.

[QUOTE=Cherodude;312650 the bulletproof 4.0L I-6. [/QUOTE]

quoted for truth

yeah the 99+ got better intakes, but something about emmisions reduced the HP, that was the point to make up the lost horses to bring them back to other reg intaked I6s....

4.0 is a must, the 4Cyl cant get out of its own way, others will try to tell you different.. w/e

the 242 (Selec-Trac) is the best tcase in the XJs....

and im not sure what all came in later or older XJs but the AX-15, AW4 and 42RE, (i think the AX15 is a 5sp manual) of the 3 i would take the 42RE<--mine survived a 5K neutral drop to drive in my ZJ. juss sayin (dont let your 12 yr cousin grab keys)

Re: Looking at XJ's

Well I bought me an XJ today. It's a 2001 fully loaded, leather heated seats and power everything. It has 135k miles on the clock. Seems well taken care of, I am the 3rd owner.. It has a little scrape on the left rear corner of the bumper. Cell phone pic not so good

Wow! Looks great! Nice Leather, and you got a nice color! If you don't mind, how much did you get it for?

Re: Looking at XJ's

nice xj bro! when i was shopping for some i always wanted a fully loaded 01 model, interior is very comfortable in that limited

does it have a sunroof? steering wheel all options? i see its doesnt have the limited chrome theme or front bumper accents (fog lights)

are you gonna do any clear corner and parking light action or just leave it stock up front? euro tails?

i spy with my lil eye the beast in the last interior shot-

good stuff man!

No sunroof or cruise control. It's gonna stay pretty much as is, I bought if for our extra/snow car. not going to be a DD...

Re: Looking at XJ's

great looking jeep. the only thing to keep an eye on in the 2000-2001 models is the coolant level. in 2000, they went to a different head casting that was much more prone to cracking than previous years. I believe the casting number was 0331. Just keep an eye on your coolant level to make sure it's not seeping down slowly over time. A lot of times, the crack will be small and the only way to tell is that your coolant will creep down slowly over time. Overall, XJ's are bullet proof. I'm on my third

Re: Looking at XJ's

Nice XJ man! I see you have the very rare heated seats. Those are not an easy find in the later years.

Hope you enjoy it!

Re: Looking at XJ's

The early 0331 heads are crack prone. The later ones(can't remember the year they changed)are ok. The good ones have "tupy" cast into them between cyl #3 & #4 IIRC.
