New to me '01 XJ- lift suggestions?

Hi all,

Just picked up a cream puff 01 XJ for my daughter. Looking to put a small lift (2 or 2 1/2") and some slightly bigger tires. My main concern is getting a lift that drives well on the road. Not into rock climbing or mud, so looking for a great riding lift- Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Seavee

I'm picking up a '98 tomorrow and was wondering the same thing. I just put an IRO 4" on my WJ and after some fine tuning, it drives great. . . but not like it used to. I expected that and just remember everytime you lift, any chassis or suspension issues will become magnified and you'll learn how to pick through them as you go.

As for the XJ. I used to own one and they're great, thinkin' about going a bit higher, but this forum seems pretty dead. . . Look around for some advise, there's spots that are busier.

Here is a couple of links. Budget boost should do it. Simple install. The ride shouldn't be compromised much.

Hope this helps,

After looking around quite a bit, the best way to go is just spend a little extra and go with a 4.5in rough country. IRO sells the same kit for the same price at $450. You figure a 2.5in BB will require new shocks and you're more than halfway to a "real" kit.

Re: New to me '01 XJ- lift suggestions?

I did a budget lift on the 98 XJ I had for a while. Took the approach from one of the other forums and ended up with a great handling and riding XJ.

For the rear, I hunted down another set of rear leafs, opened the pack and cut the eyes off of the top leaf. I then opened the original leaf pack and inserted the additional upper leaf below the top leaf in the pack and bundled it back together. Added new u bolts, and some other small parts.

For the front, I used a basic poly spacer to get lift to match the rear. Some people use ZJ UpCountry springs instead of the spacer.

From my original write up on Cardomain:
Quote:
Front coil spacer and Bar Pin Eliminators are here from DPG Offroad. I will combine the upper leaf from my saggy springs with the new pack and have a nice budget lift. Cannot afford the OME shocks now so I am going to do the cheapies from Advanced Auto. I used YJ fronts and ZJ rears. Total cost for all 4 is $70. OME is $300.... budget wins now. Lift install is complete! I used poly spacers on front with new shocks and new brakes: Here is a before (left) and after (right): Update May 26, 2005 All done: Lifted and I painted the charcoal wheels bright silver which we think looks better with the Chili Pepper Red and silver accents. Before After

Re: New to me '01 XJ- lift suggestions?

The suggestion that I made deals with the problematic leafs on the rear suspension. Over time they go into negative arch and make the back end twitchy. Some others have found a similar leaf pack from another vehicle for the add-a-leaf. Choices have included Dodge Dakotas. I believe both use a 2.5" wide leaf.

In the end you get a much better handling and safer ride which would be my choice for a newer driver.
