My oil pressure is dropping to 0 when the engine is warm and at idle. When the revs are above idle; or the engine is still cold, the oil pressure is reasonable. I'm assuming the oil pump is going bad and I was wondering if anyone has had the above problem with their inline 6. Needless to say, I'm preparing to replace the oil pump (and possibly main bearings).
I've heard of the high-output oil pumps and was also wondering if this would be of any benefit for an engine with 114,000 miles on it.
If anyone can help, please do! I love my jeep and don't want a car payment! Thanks guys.
It's probably just the sending unit going bad, if you don't hear any tapping or other noises when the gauge is reading 0 your probably ok. You can always get a cheap mechanical gauge and hook it up temporarily to varify the pressure. I believe the sensor on the 4.0 is right by the oil filter.
x2 on the sender, my old 99 XJ did the same. When it drops listen for unusual sounds coming from the engine, you can open you filler cap and check for oil sloshing around.
As mentioned the location is near the oil filter and is usually soaked in oil which probably causes its malfunction. Hope you get it resolved soon.
X3 for the sender,, replaced( 2) in 120,000 miles just as suggested install mechanical gauge in its place to be sure,,,,,,,,.............pat 1998 zj 4.0
put a mech. gage on it, and leave it on...the same thing cost me an engine, after being told the sensor was bad and replacing it, the gage dropped again about 2 weeks later. I thought great another sensor malfunction and kept driving....WRONG THOUGHT !!!
With the key on engine off, have someone watch the gauge, and wiggle the wires/plug and see if it changes.I had the wire pull a bit loose from the connector on mine.
Definitely install mech. gage, just swapping sensor cost me an engine rebuild. Check the oil pan for sludge (stick a flat head screwdriver in the drain and try to scoop what's on the bottom of the pan see what comes out)
