Stalls when in Drive

I had posted in the forum about a stalling issue with my 1987 Cherokee before. The problem was it would idle rough and there was a slight misfire. Turns out the previous owner had used a random assembly of spark plug wires missing half the componets in them and the throttle body was really dirty. After cleaning the TB and getting new wires it fixed the rough idle and I can now accelerate while in park with no stalling or sputtering. The issue comes once its put into drive. as soon as I touch the gas pedal the jeep dies. No sputtering, shuttering, chance for recovery, instantly dead. When I Turn the key to try and restart it it wont even crank. I have to wait about 20-30 seconds to try again and than it stats up no problem again. Also my spark plugs are coverd in black dry soot, and this was an issue before as well. These are new plugs and have not been in for more than a day. The stalling only occurs in drive when I push the gas pedal, as it will idle fine in every gear. Sorry for the long post to get you guys the most amount of detail possible.

Re: Stalls when in Drive

Welcome to the garage.
Does the engine accelerate a bit before it stalls? If you push the accelerator very slowly, does it then still stall?
After it stalled, it doesn´t even crank. Do the instrument panel lights come on? Did you check the battery and wiring?

Re: Stalls when in Drive

So I did some digging around and I got it to drive...basically guy who I got it from removed the air box and cut off the hose leading to the air box exposing the TB....I replaced that gasket and part of the hose going over the TB and now it will drive. It still idles something terrible...the RPM's waver as well...they will sit around 600 go slowly to 1000 than drop back down. While I was digging I found the crank position sensor is melted...at least partially. The connector going from the unit into the trucks harness is. It still turns over no issues though so is it possible that can effect it? I heard that bad cps means the truck won't even turn over.

I'm not sure what all the previous owner did but died at I redid the plugs and wires...the cap looks new as does the tps. It used to backfire through the exhaust manifold but it seems to have fixed itself with the partial air box assembly

Re: Stalls when in Drive

Any idea why the connector is melted? When there is no crank signal, for sure the engine will not start (it will still crank though). So there still must be the crank sensor pulse. I would for sure first repair this connector, before spending any other money on parts. You probably can find the connector on Rockauto.com and splice it in the existing wiring.

Re: Stalls when in Drive

It looked like it was hanging pretty low and I'd assume it somehow touched the exhaust manifold. That was my plan, to get the connector... Just never spliced anything before haha so that should be interesting. Other than cps what could cause the RPM's to waver? It seems to be pulsating as well...it's a pattern not really random

Re: Stalls when in Drive

Irregular idle rpm can be caused by a dirty throttle body (especially the idle air control canal and stepper motor plunjer), or a TPS which is getting bad.

Re: Stalls when in Drive

I cleaned the TB and that really helped and today I cleaned out the IAC...it looks like both units are fairly clean so I suspect the previous owner swapped them...there is an old tps in the box of parts he gave me. Could any of this be tied to a bad exhaust manifold gasket? I'm pretty sure mine is blown

Re: Stalls when in Drive

A leaking exhaust header gasket can cause air to be drawn into the exhaust and the O2 rich air will influence the O2 sensors, will can cause a rich mixture. (PCM is seeing a high O2 level, so will compensate with a possitive fuel trim). I would for sure also repair this first before trying anything else.

Re: Stalls when in Drive

Ok thanks for all the help! This weekend I will be putting in a new manifold as well as replace my cps...hopefully that will solve the issue with the stalling and rough idle!
