Studdering during acceleration

Have a question, have a recently bought 99 Cherokee Limited with about 133,000 miles on it. Not sure about the maintenance background on the vehicle. Not to long ago the check engine light came on and also about that time it also started studdering during acceleration. it is an automatic, it does it when in drive, 3rd, 2nd, it seems to be only during mild and light acceleration during heavy (full open throttle)it is not as bad. Has anyone come across this problem before and if so could you tell me how you fixed it.

Also can any recommend a good Jeep mechanic here in the San Diego area?
Thanks

Re: Studdering during acceleration

The check engine light tells you that there is a fault code set in the PCM. I don´t know if you can see the engine faults on the odometer using the keydance, but if you can´t, you need to take it to a place where it can be scanned.
The fault code can tell what is wrong and what should be done.

Re: Studdering during acceleration

I was not sure if I could do the "key dance" to see the codes or not. What is the process for the "key dance" or what year models can you do that vice having to take it in and getting them read?

Re: Studdering during acceleration

The keydance works like this: switch ignition switch off/on 3 times and leave it in on at the third time (so not starting). The odometer will show the fault codes, or DONE when all ok. Not sure if this will work on your jeep though.
