What's my noise? - 01 XJ

2001 Cherokee 4X4, 242 transfer case, 141,000 miles

Noise - A high pitched noise coming from the front left wheel area. Sounds like air leaving a balloon when pinched ( great description, I know).

-Starts around 10 MPH and gets higher pitch with more MPH
- Sounds like a "rotational" problem
- Doesn't matter if in 4 wheel drive or rear drive
- Going through puddles doesn't temporarily silence it ( so temporary lubrication from water doesn't silence it- internal, I guess)

So I'm thinking axle / wheel bearings??

What do you folks think?

Id check wheel bearings first! Jack it up and try to move the tires from side to side, if you can best wanna invest in wheel bearings. Doesn't sound like an axle issue, I've been through 2 front d30s already lmao. It would be more humming, clunking kinda noises . I'd check out the entire front end just to be sure, never heard of air leaving a ballon description before lol. Good luck!

Might even be worth it to check out the differential as well! Get her up in the air and have someone rotate the tires while ya look into the gears, check fluid for metal shavings. Just had my pinion bearing blow it was making all sorts of racket until I finally diagnosed it.
