Re: 10,000km Service CRD

There is nothing Jeep can do to stop you. If you can prove the logbook servicing has been done they cannot deny warranty or provide you with service. If you look at what is done on a service, you would be shocked by how little is done. You can order all the parts and it is easy to do. Pay to get the stuff that needs a hoist.

Re: 10,000km Service CRD

I am absolutely stunned by how much some of you are paying for routine service at your dealers. Thousands of dollars paid out before the vehicle is even out of warranty? I've owned 5 brand new Jeeps over the past decade - total amount I've spent at dealerships for service? $0.00.

I think I'm going to move down under and open up an auto shop. I'll do the oil changes for $100 out the door, and I'll pick up the lunch tab on each visit. $200 to check tyre pressure and change the air filter? My price would be $50 with a 6-pk of brew tossed in.

Re: 10,000km Service CRD

As long as you can demonstrate that you have used genuine parts and lubricants / fluids that meet specification (ie keep all receipts and record in the log book when the service was done and what was done,) it cannot effect your warranty. However if you stuff something up while self performing the service, then warranty cannot be expected to cover that.

Obviously you are happy with your service price, but I have to say I've never seen an equivalent price for the oil posted. It may be worth checking what they used and if it complies with Chrysler MS11106.
It is extremely important that the CRD gets only full synthetic low ash oil compatible with an exhaust DPF and exhaust gas recirculation. Oils with high ash content will very quickly gunk up the DPF and clog the engine inlet valves and passages.
I can't recall where but I'm sure a list of complying oils has already been posted somewhere.
The ones I've checked have all been significantly more than ~$49 for the required 8+ litres.
Also see here: CRD oil on special
I supply my own to the dealer to make sure I don't get a "one size fits all" oil from their drum.
John
The service centre hasn't come back to me with the oil details except to say it is Caltex Havoline which I knew anyway by the sticker on the window. The service centre is Scderia Veloce Motors which is now part of the Suttons Motors Group so one would hope they are doing the right thing. The only complying oil Caltex has is Havoline Fully Synthetic C3 5W-30. This is an ACEA C3 oil complying with Mercedes Benz MB 229.31. I've checked with Caltex and they have not tested it against Chrysler Material Standard MS-11106. Now this is where things gets tricky. American and Australian documentation differ slightly on spec requirements as follows:
American documentation:
It must meet ACEA C3 and must meet either Chrysler MS-11106 or MB 229.51
Australian documentation:
It must meet ACEA C3 and Chrysler MS-11106 and must meet either MB 229.31 or MB 229.51
So the Havoline meets the Australian requirements (except for MS-11106) but not the American requirements. From what I can determine, the only difference between MB 229.31 and MB 229.51 is that the former is good for about 12,000km whereas the latter is one of the new "long life" oils and is good for about 20,000km. However MB presupposes the use of fleece type oil filters with the long life oil rather than the traditional paper type. This may partly explain why the Australian oil change schedule is 10,000km as against the American schedule of 20,000km. I expect that the long life oils and fleece filters are considerably more expensive. Presumably Fiat Chrysler Aust. determined that we were not yet ready for the fancy stuff.

Havoline Fully Synthetic C3 5W-30 is also the oil that Caltex recommends on their site for the WK 3L CRD. Incidentally, Caltex, Castrol, Western Gulf, Mobil, Nulon, Penrite and Valvoline all provide specific recommendations for the WK 3L CRD. The funny thing is that they all use the same database. My guess is that they are all the same oil.

Re: 10,000km Service CRD

I don't have enough time or understanding to do this research to this level of detail. I need to rely on the experts who I pay for this service. Thankfully i believe we can also rely on the vehicle to some extent because it will throw a code if the oil doesn't meet specs. Having said that I am glad I'm a member of this site that has people like you who are able to do the extra research and provide us with your thoughts. Thanks bob.

What i take from the above is - the oil used meets a standard and that whilst the oil may not meet the other level of spec 10,000km services are enough to ensure everything should be ok so long as one of the listed oils is used...

"My guess is that they are all the same oil." - conspiracy theory??

Re: 10,000km Service CRD

GDay Bob, like you I did a fair amount of research (while waiting for our WK2 to arrive...as one does....had to ban myself from the internet for a while to get jobs done), and shortly after the first CRD's arrived there seemed to be a bit of confusion even amongst dealers of what oil should be used.
There were stories of dealers charging in excess of $30/l for oil, and stories of dealers using wrong oil. There were lots of posts on the caravaners forum at the time.
I did a fair bit of reading about low SAPS / longlife oils and particularly as they relate to VW diesel engines - they've been around a fair while in Europe and this question of oil is an ongoing topic. Why you need to use 504/507 oils in FSI/TSI/TDI engines!
I reasoned the best way to stay clear of any issues was to supply my own oil and decided on the Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W- 30 that actually has the MS11106 approval on the container. It is a long life oil, approved for BMW, VW and Mecedes diesels fitted with DPF - is readily available to me and comes at the right price. Works for me...

Mendo - are you sure that the vehicle throws a code if the wrong oil is used??? I know it is smart - but that smart??
John

Rest assured that they are definately not the same oil. Datatek must just be the goto software provider for this type of thing. Also note that just because an oil blender (supplier) has a database that recommends a oil for a particular application, doesn't necessary mean that the recommended oil automatically complies with the vehicle manufacturers specs. Some oil companies like to use the terms "may be used" or "can be used", "recommended for use" which really are quite worthless.

Also terms like "meets specification" generally means that technically the oil meets the relevant specification but does not necessary have the written approvals, unless stated otherwise. "Approvals" are generally the strongest reference on a can of oil.

I am going to use the Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W- 30 as the container looks pretty, and repco have it at a good price.
