Re: 10,000km Service CRD

Another bit of trivia. Castrol's online recommendation for the CRD is their Magnatec Diesel 5W-40, yes 5W-40. I checked with them. The reason is that their complying oil is Edge Professional OE-X 5W-30 but this is available only in 20L containers. The nearest 5L retail pack oil they have is the Magnatec Diesel 5W-40 but are happy to standing by their recommendation. Their other recommended oil is Magnatec Professional C3 5W-40 also available only in 20L. From what the others have said, Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30 sounds like the most practical readily available oil for the CRD.

Re: 10,000km Service CRD

The plot thickens.......Zzkazu has just posted in another topic on this forum CRD oil on special
that Shell have changed their labelling on the Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30 5l container, removing the reference to Chrysler MS11106 approval.
In checking my stuff I purchased the other day I have 1 container with the approval and 1 without!!!
Rats - now more research needed.

Re: 10,000km Service CRD

Mendo - are you sure that the vehicle throws a code if the wrong oil is used??? I know it is smart - but that smart??
John

Not sure about the CRD. But I recall threads regarding the hemis and the oil required for the MDS. In those cases there was also confusion. Where oil added was believed to be in spec but actually was not, a warning or code would be produced

Nowhere! But all the documentation is laced with warnings and threats to the point that they have us all spooked. The implication is that if we don't have an authorised service, we are guilty of misuse until proven innocent by producing documents. They want to throw the onus back onto us. Thanks to Milous and others I'm increasingly leaning towards going back to DIY servicing. The only reason I stopped was when I got a leased company car (in a former life).

well I followed up with a phone call to the Shell Aus technical help desk and got the information that indeed the Chrysler approval has been removed from the container AND the techical data sheet available on the Shell Australia website
http://www.epc.shell.com/Docs/GPCDOC...1203151136.pdf
The contact did not know why, but surmised that the formulation of the oil may have been slightly changed so that it no longer has the approval. I noted that it retained all the other major hitech diesel makers approvals - plus referred them to Zzkazu's link in the other thread which still shows the approval.
Upshot is that the contact will do some more homework and come back to me with more info if possible.
In the meantime - it is possible that the Shell Ultra Helix Extra 5W-30 may not comply.
I've cross posted this in my other thread because it is important to those who might do their own oil changes or supply to their dealer.
John

Re: 10,000km Service CRD

I don't think that we should get too excited about the missing Chrysler Ref. Its the other numbers that are important: SAE 5W-30, ACEA C3, MB 229.51. My Dealer uses Castrol Edge Professional OEX 5W-30 and that doesn't ref the Chrysler spec.

Still, keep us posted.

Perhaps we are but it's not a matter of which oil is best but confusion over specifications. If Chrysler want to threaten us with loss of warranty then we deserve clarification of material specs. For example, is MS-11106 a must or not? If it is a must, where are we supposed to get it? Mopar? In terms of oil quality, they all use feedstock from the same small number of manufacturers then add a squirt of this and a squirt of that in line with the same research they have all read and the market niche they are targetting. The marketing people then get busy differentiating their product with hype and sexy labels. There are a few exotics but they are beyond the reach of us mere mortals.

Re: 10,000km Service CRD

If you feel more comfortable seeing MS 11106 referenced then maybe try and source:

"Mobil 1™ ESP Formula 5W-30"

Applications
Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 is recommended for all types of modern automobile engines, especially the high-performance gasoline and diesel engines found in the latest passenger cars, SUVs and light vans.
  • Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 is especially suitable for extreme conditions, where conventional oil often may not perform
  • It is not recommended for 2-Cycle or aviation engines, unless specifically approved by the manufacturer.

Specifications and Approvals

Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 has the following builder approvals:
BMW
Longlife 04
MB-Approval
229.31/229.51
Volkswagen (Gasoline / Diesel)
504 00 / 507 00
Porsche
C30
Chrysler
MS-11106
Peugeot/CitroŽn Automobiles
B71 2290

Personally, I'll stick to the Shell Ultra Extra. Just print out the Shell 2012 product guide, stick it in a file at home and that would be sufficient backup.
