That's one of my pet hates with the service schedule, 10,000kms or 6 months whichever comes around the first. So if the cars holed up in the garage for 6 months unused, the oil that has sat in the sump all that time must be replaced???? I don't accept that.

Re: 10,000km Service CRD

In Europe the CRD schedule service is 20K, and this year for New Zealand CRD's the schedule was changed from 12K to 20K. Do our conditions merit halving the schedule for here??
I find it interesting that it is very quiet on the Australian front regarding letting the vehicle make the call via the embedded software and service indicator. Mercedes, VW and BMW dealers seem to be happy to go by the vehicle indicator.
Insert from my WK2 owners manual - "Your vehicle is fitted with an engine oil change indicator system", " the engine oil change indicator system is duty cycle based, which means the engine oil change interval may fluctuate, dependent on your personal driving style".

Is it just that we haven't got around to trusting "new" technology and a hang over from the days when the oil got dropped every 5k and changed the plugs every 10K?

In my case I think it is a hangover - 7 Patrols in 40 years (we had a G60!) and all got 5k oil and filter changes - over the years thats a swag of money (I considered it just an oncost of owning and operating in the environment we took them).

So far I'm not hung up on 10K services but maybe I should be trusting the vehicle - it does pretty well in everything else.......

Re: 10,000km Service CRD

Unfortunately we are tied to what is currently the specified service schedule. I'm comfortable with 10k services for the diesel, however I think that the minimum service interval of 6 months regardless of kms should be 12. Doesn't really effect myself though as we average about 25 - 30k per year.

Re: 10,000km Service CRD

That's the thing Swampy, if you are clocking up the k's and not thrashing the daylights out of the thing, your engine oil is likely not to be gunked up, and hence changes could be extended out a bit.
Other manufacturers promote the technology - why doesn't Jeep Australia?

O - I think I already have the answer.....

Re: 10,000km Service CRD

I imagine the 20k service interval is for the tuned down (140kw) version of CRDs sold in Europe.

Yep I agree and is how I am approaching it. Just another example of consumer gouging which Vehicle dealerships are particularly adept at. If we weren't to trust the oil change indicator it should be stated in the manual or disabled! I wonder what the African interval is?

I too am inclined to trust the technology. I remember reading of a bus fleet operator that tried condition-based monitoring by way of testing the engine oil regularly and only changing when the oil failed to meet certain criteria. They found their oil change intervals could be extended by multiples saving heaps. There is the environmental saving as well but that was not an issue back then. OK, the Jeep system is not exactly condition-based monitoring but if it uses things like revs, engine load and fuel consumption, all things electronically available to it, then it is a quantum leap over using just time and distance. There is also the issue of maintenance induced failures. One is much more likely to have a failure immediately after a service than any other time. So the fewer times you take your car to the dealers the better. I like the analogy of the bolt with 8 nuts screwed onto it. Assume the nuts are numbered and have to be in order. There is only one way the nuts can be taken off the bolt but 40,319 ways they can be put back wrong.

Of course not. Take a good look at the service book and it's obvious that it is just a generic service schedule that pre-dates the WK2. JGC Australia just cant be bothered creating and administering new schedules.

Or they just have an absolutely humungous stack of old service schedules they need to get rid of.

To be honest though, I'm still uneasy about letting oil changes wait 12 months but I'd be happy enough doing a change myself between dealer visits.

Re: 10,000km Service CRD

Just had a 20K service done by dealer....with supply of my own oil - $284!!
Surprise surprise - 20K should include an air filter.
None in stock - special order!!

The longest time with me was spent trying to extol the virtues of nitrogen fill in the tyres (at a special price) and one of the major benefits was the wheels wouldn't rust inside!
I don't think I am really that cabbage looking.....When I pointed out the wheels were alloy it didn't slow the spiel one bit.

Stood behind another WK2 CRD owner while he and the adviser discussed a clunk in the rear suspension - self levelling, not QL - never been heard of before!! Poor guy got fed a load of guff and I felt like taking him aside and introducing him to the Jeep forums around.

Things don't appear to be improving on the dealer front.

Re: 10,000km Service CRD

I always thought the benefit of Nitrogen in tyres was due to their resistance to leakage as opposed to air. Nothing to do with rust.
fyi. I use nitrogen, mainly because for me it was free.
