Re: 20" Tyre Thread

I'm looking at getting new tyres to replace the old (25k) Khumos, which are pretty much illegal now!

I've been trying to workout what are best for 20 inch rims, but there are so many options and variations I still don't know...

I'm looking at 275/285 50 20's, Nitto GT2's, Cooper AT3's or Zeon LTZ, and Yokohama Geolander G012. Can anyone clarify the differences please!

I do mostly road 70%, sand (Fraser etc) 20% and dirt tracks 10%.

Cheers!

When you say 70% road 10% dirt track, this really means for every 70km driving to and from work, you are also doing 10km on dirt tracks. This is really an awful lot on the dirt. However, that 10% on the dirt probably does 90% of the damage so it doesn't hurt to exaggerate a bit. We all do it. I have no experience with any of these tyre but it seems to me that you need to toughest. From the literature, the toughest of the bunch are the Nitto GT2's (in LT) and Cooper AT3's. Be careful with the Nitto's. They have a bewildering array of widths and profiles in 20", some are LT some are XL. My preference for off-road is always the LT's however these have a considerably larger diameter than the XL's so rubbing may be a problem.

Re: 20" Tyre Thread

Must admit, I am a bit of a Cooper fan. Have had AT3's LTZ's and now the new SRX as my road tyre.
The AT3's are a great AT tyre. Good on the road, dirt and light mud, but gunk up easily in thick mud. They also get noisy as they wear. Not too bad though.
The LTZ's are great on road and surprisingly good in thick mud and all other off road surfaces. They do hum from new and get slightly worse as they wear.
The SRX are an awesome on road tyre. Great traction in wet and dry and possibly the quietest tyre I have ever had. As far as mud etc, haven't tried them and judging by the tread, wouldn't recommend them. They do come with a 80,000 Klm warranty.

Cheers, Craig
