Re: 20" Tyre Thread

Anyone know what would be a good off road tyre for 20 inch Spider Monkeys?

Cheers!

275 55 20 Yokohama G012 installed yesterday on WK2 with QL.

I initially thought they were rubbing at the rear RHS in Park Mode but I was wrong.

Yes they rub at full lock on the front but there is NO rubbing on the rear felt linings which is the problem with some of the wider versions such as the Grappler G2.

I did trip down to Warragul today to visit the inlaws 150km round trip, aero/normal and park mode at fountain gate shopping centre including speed humps and NO rubbing.

This tyre is extremely quiet and is no louder than the standard Kumhos and a actually feels more responsive.

Initially had 40psi in the tyres and was a similar harsh ride to the kumhos, dropped down to 38psi and much better floats over the bumps instead of jarring.

Will report on the fuel consumption and wet traction soon.

Re: 20" Tyre Thread

Hi, update on my rubbing issues for the 275/55's.

Wasn't rubbing on the rear felt, but last week went offroad and climbed a trail that was >20% in places - required low and rock settings. Came back and when cleaning the car found the felt to be polished fairly deep in, but no marking on the tyre I can see. Suspect that the weight distribution to the rear while going up steep trails compressed rear suspension and caused the rubbing.

This is however minor compared to the fender damage caused by full suspension travel with these tyres. I'm getting the fender replaced soon but need to organise next tyre size down first - they were fun while the experiment lasted

Oh, and someone asked before, they are Pirelli atr's

Thanks for the info but that's a mighty expensive experiment isn't it?

Thanks for the heads up and I will have a bit more a play with articulation but we dont go off road except for gravel tracks, etc.

Not all 275 55 20 are the same size hence why I went with the G012, both it and the Cooper AT are the smallest of all the 275 55 20.

Cheers

Re: 20" Tyre Thread

Damage on the front left fender. If you look straight on at the wheel, it's around the 10 to 11 mark on a clock face. It's a crease in the fender that you can only see in a few angles ( untill you know it's there, and it's outward, so impact from the inside) I'll have a go at photographing it tomorrow in some decent light.

I was driving down a dirt track at probably 40-50kmh and the right front went off a 1 ft drop and bottomed out the suspension pretty harshly. I didn't discover it for a couple of weeks, but it's relatively clear how it happened when you look at the angle of the crease.

I didn't think it was an experiment at the time because I read heaps of experiences and recommendations here. While the tyres fit when driving around normally or parking they start to not fit with any off-road driving.

It's possible the above incident happened with the front wheel turned to some degree.

The rubbing over the Easter weekend on the rear is going to happen to anyone climbing a steep hill, though it's not serious as it's just a aesthetic cover part in the wheel well

Next set will probably by the 285/50 coopers - if the car lasts that long ( 85k now)

Get a front wheel alignment as soon as you can! I had a similar thing happen and found the left steering knuckle was bent but in my case there was no damage to the mud guard. The GC's front suspension is relatively weak for a 4x4. The steering knuckle in particular is the same one used on a number Chrysler stabe vehicles even the Chrysler 300 sedan. I was not aware of the problem till a mechanic got me to look at the car from the front. The left front wheel had noticeably more negative camber than the other. He wasn't able to adjust it. I shipped in a new steering knuckle and got him to install it and re-align the wheels.

Re: 20" Tyre Thread

Those that have the Nitto Terragraplers - are yours slippery on wet roads? Mine has almost zero traction in roundabouts/corners. Mine are about a year old with close to 90% thread. Does it help if you drop the psi?

Re: 20" Tyre Thread

Mine are pretty good, only remember once that they broke traction at speed. I run mine at 37 psi.
My Bridgie 697's are a little gripper.
