2014 Grand cherokee diesel accelerator pedal

Hi all,

Got my name down for a GC. Diesel and it finally came in ande we took it for a test drive. One thing we noticed was the accelerator was not linear. Ie, accelerating from a standstill with a typical amount of pedal travel and the vehicle would act quite sluggishly, requiring more pedal, giving it a small amount more would then see the vehicle accelerate to much, I'd almost call it turbo lag but I wouldn't have thought it was this bad.

Is this normal behaviour for the GC turbo diesel?

Yep, and if you tend to drive other cars it can be somewhat annoying.

Cheers,
Steve

It is all or nothing, I generally get in trouble for going too hard... Let's say not much beats me off at the lights.

Re: 2014 Grand cherokee diesel accelerator pedal

Thanks for the replies, is it something that you get better at controlling, get used to or live with it?

Love they way it gets up and boogies, but my wife wasn't keen on this as it happened mid corner and when turning back into the dealer, so much so she apologised to the salesperson, I noticed it too in a separate drive and the salesman he didn't know (he wasn't a Jeep salesman so had no knowledge really) but thought it was in 'delivery mode'.

Re: 2014 Grand cherokee diesel accelerator pedal

That's exactly why I switch the ECO mode off when driving around town. I found that it didn't move of the line until i gave a decent prod on the accelerator, then surged.
I could probably drive smoother and more economical around town with it off.
Sport mode in a Laredo without Quadalift just makes the (many) gearchanges slightly more jerky.

The turbo lag itself is noticeable but not unexpected and somewhat typical for a single turbo (and a decent sized, but not huge, Garret VGT 2056). It has variable inlet vanes which help to spool it up a bit better with lower gas flow but there is still some wait for the boost.

I have had turbocharged cars (Subaru's) before and of course a 2.3tonne SUV is not going to leap off the line like one of those.

I think the Jeep is less laggy than other single turbo diesels SUV. The old Landrover Disco was terrible. The newer one is twin-turbo (sequential with VGT on the smaller one). I test drove a Ranger, BT-50, Territory, Mitsu Challeger and all had similar lag or more than the JGC.

The only twin (sequential) turbo diesel I've driven is a LC 200 4.5V8 and that feel quite porky off the line but has a decent surge perhaps earlier than the Jeep but with its extra weight is feels less sporty(?) compared to the Jeep. It drinks the diesel much faster too.

Re: 2014 Grand cherokee diesel accelerator pedal

Thanks Steve, so if the Eco mode is turned off, the accelerator becomes more linear and that initial sluggishness/prod throttle then surge smoothes out?

It is a deal breaker for us as my wife will be mostly driving it and we have a dangerous intersection (right turn into an uphill main road) we use daily which requires decent acceleration but controllable due to the turn.

Re: 2014 Grand cherokee diesel accelerator pedal

Big favour, was wondering if anyone could try Steves great suggestion by turning Eco mode off in the morning an seeing if you lose traffic light drags

I have a brilliant deal on a new MY15 diesel GC that I'd hate to pass by but have to give an answer to the dealer in the morning Perth time.

Many thanks for your experiences so far!

Re: 2014 Grand cherokee diesel accelerator pedal

I used to turn ECO off, but after a while I simply adapted to the style of acceleration and usually leave it on. I switch to Sport mode if required.
That said, I am still considering a Bluespark to get rid of this - Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 V6 CRD 2014 on (EcoDiesel) 247 BHP / 184kw Petrol & Diesel Chip Tuning Boxes)

Re: 2014 Grand cherokee diesel accelerator pedal

Have you tried turning off Hill start assist? We noticed this too when we first picked up our jeep. Turned that off and it was much better, and haven't thought of it again for 10 months till reading this post. Oh and yes we always drive with eco off and it feels much too sluggish with it on.

^^^^^^^ This x 1,000.
I forgot about that, HSA is horrid unless you really need it, even then, turn it off at any stage you don't, it's a killer.

Well I've had it for only about 6-7weeks. I'm still getting used to it.
I generally don't try to rocket of the line, just progressively give it some and "waft" off from the light gently Miss Daisy style.

I think the ECO off does make it more linear feeling initially but once spinning at 1800-2000revs no difference.
It's probably better to drive ECO for everything from 15kmh up wards.
... except towing, ECO stays off for towing.

If you need to rocket out of your intersection quickly the SRT 6.4 V8 would be suitable and has a "Launch control" function too I think. would your wife prefer that one?

Hill start assist, i turned off too.
With an auto you don't need it. With a manual and a proper handbrake you don't need it either.

It holds the brakes on whilst you're first depressing the accelerator. That could give a slow getaway, if your just tickling the pedal.
