I think it really sucks! Don't know how other computerised cars do it, but there should at least be a low range/centre diff lock option. As it happened, the track I was on was 4wd mainly for clearance reasons, so I got out again, albeit with some nervous river crossings.
Seems there is not enough thought about getting stuck somewhere remote. I read on the Eco-diesel forum where someone's DEF failed (which we don't have) and they could only drive for 200 miles before the car would shut down. Not enough if you are out bush somewhere.
Moral: always carry a sat phone!

I meant to figure that out as I still had many weeks of the trip left, but I couldn't find anything out during my limited internet access, and didn't go to the trouble of pulling a wheel off to look. I was lucky I guess - didn't happen again. If anyone on this forum knows, I'd appreciate it.

Yep, I was thinking of asking the service tech about it..... just in case I need to know one day.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Didn't "Serv 4WD" still permit low range selection, and thus effect the centre diff lock?

If anyone experiences this type of issue with a MY14 and is unable to select low range, I'd try disabling the ABS/TC/ESC electronics through rampant fuse pulling. If that didn't work, I wonder if reactivating it with the busted circuit paralleled onto a good one wouldn't see it confused enough to work adequately to get you out of trouble? The other sensor on the same side would be the least worst.

My car best hope it doesn't play up on me somewhere remote... I will show it no respect to get mobile again

What about pulling the battery lead to reset?

Oh I thought we were talking about damaged / inoperable wheel speed sensors...

Yes, I don't think a reset would work, because it resets itself after a time/ign cycles/distance etc if the error doesn't reappear. Then faults again when it sees the error. Mine was going off/on once or twice a day.
One interesting symptom in my case, was that although active cruise didn't work at all, even when the abs light reset itself, regular cruise would set and try to maintain speed, but kept surging around the set speed. This had me guessing it was a speed sensor before I got it diagnosed.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

I was thinking about the old 4WD serv issue where intermittent bad data from a working sensor was causing the problem. Or the above ABS issue, a reset might be enough.... might need to clean it off aswell if dirt is causing the bad data.

Inoperable sensors would be a challenge..... I wonder how hard they would be to change out yourself.....

Yep, I was thinking if you were stuck somewhere, and needed 4-Low, a rest would clear it without having to drive.

That would be worth a try. Never thought of it at the time.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Looks like the sensor is easy enough to replace, though the fronts look like you have to remove the brake calipers..... if you were desparate, then I guess you could pop them out and clean them.

Can't find a part number, but there are lots on ebay for the WH....

Where'd you see that? Did you pull a wheel off?
