Just one thing Red... be careful connecting that positive. One false move and you're arc welding.

It's better to lift the negative... and it's not too hard to access with the seat all the way forward.

Cheers,
Steve

Well said, and oh so true.
On anything negative ground, I always disconnect the negative first, or RE-connect it last.

I left the terminal towards the front of the car on, it was getting a tad difficult to disconnect given the limited space I had to work in. Disconnected the one towards the rear of the car (can't remember which was which). Will take care and ensure I'm wearing welding goggles when attempting reattachment!

As an aside I did ask the dealer how one accesses the battery if it is flat... to replace it, given the seat has to be moved forward electronically! Not too well thought out that!

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

The back (rearmost) one is the negative.

If the battery is flat you use the jump posts under the bonnet to re-energise the car. If you have a spare compatible battery at hand you'd likely have some jumper leads or a booster pack too.

Lifting the battery out would be interesting though. Awkward!

Cheers,
Steve

That would make it a tad difficult to see at all.... unless you actually ARE arcing to the the seat rails.

The problem is that the car uses a little bit of power to keep systems alive. That trickle discharge may or may not be enough to stop the car starting, depending on the time frame, but will do your battery no good.

Anytime a battery is stored, the closer to chock a block full the better.
If you take ANY lead acid battery (whether AGM or whatever) a long way down, EVEN to say 50% capacity, you are significantly reducing it's life.
Take it down to say 10% capacity (ie:90% discharged) and you are DRASTICALLY reducing it's life.

If leaving my vehicle for a month or two, I'd definitely be leaving it on a smart charger OR disconnecting the battery. It's not worth the risk. These batteries are expensive.

Cya

PS. It's great that the battery is away from heat, under the seat, even though it is a bit awkward to get at. Heat is a battery killer, along with over discharging.

It will be interesting to see how long they last down there, especially if never over discharged.
I've only recently replaced the AGM batteries in my caravan at eight years of age, and I put that longevity totally down to the fact I've looked after them, with a very good solar system and NEVER discharging below about 50%, ever, and rarely even that low. Batteries are too expensive to abuse.

I hear you about the heat being a killer.
This ugly swollen mess is what I was confronted with recently (23rd Dec.)

Lets just say the ventilation in that compartment in the caravan has been significantly improved now.

Finding a new battery on 24th Dec cost me nearly $400, a few hasty phonecalls, couple of hours running around buying bits for my engineered solution and cut into the afternoon's beer drinking time.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

I wouldn't argue against that repeatedly over discharging a battery will shorten it's useable life, however, pragmatically - in the use case discussed, it's a non critical event and not even close to being worth the effort of sticking it on a charger unless you plan on leaving it for 2-3 months repeatedly.

The power draw of a functioning Jeep GC when turned off is actually quite low. (we load tested this a while ago, I don't have the figures handy).

It's an AGM battery which means it isn't going to fail from a single relatively deep discharge.

Many people have flattened these batteries completely and they still function fine when fully charged. Dealers weren't replacing batteries when dealing with the recent Jeep GC flat battery issue.

And most importantly, they are under warranty for 3 years anyway, I don't know about other people but there is zero chance i'm going to wait for a bettery to become unserviceable and leave me stranded somewhere before I replace it, I typically replace them at about 3-4 years regardless.

Your other example of a caravan battery is more relevant because in general grey nomads driving 30kph under the limit in the right hand lane use and or squatting they are being constantly deeply discharged.
