Don't get the paint protection from the dealer. Its likely to start to peel after some time and make your car look like crap, especially if done poorly (and doing things poorly is what dealers do best). They also charge more than it would cost to get it done elsewhere.

I've never seen a bad thing said about the 3M film and I'd have it on my car if there was anyone here to do it and I could afford it.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Yes. We have the film on our VW Golf.
It does protect "to a point", and it is almost invisible. Ours has a few chips in the 3M, and some of these have penetrated though to the paint. Do I think it is worth it? To an extent, yes. It is expensive, so you need to ask yourself, would it be cheaper to repaint the bonnet?
In regard to bras, yep. Got one on the GC too.

My 2012 was shipped on the Taiko. I was totally addicted to the shipping sites grabbing webcam shots of the ship in every port as it travelled south west...loads of shots as is passed through the Panama!! I know it sounds sad, but it helped the 6 weeks pass sooo quickly!! Back in the land of the living now and loving the Jeep!! Good luck!!

Whilst awaiting my car I have investigated "paint protection". The dealer has offerred this service at a price. There are lots of others in each city listed on the net under "car paint protection".
There are operators out their offerring a 3M film....it looks like "glad wrap" which is computer cut and then placed over your paintwork. They claim it is superior to the others with the liquids etc that are "buffed" on. They claim the 3M film is invisible but will stop paint chipping which the traditional paint protection will not. The stone chips are absorbed into the film. After many years the film can be peeled off and new film applied if you wish. They claim your paintwork remains original beneath the film.
If you run this 3M film past a dealer they will say it does not work but is that because they are trying to sell their additional paint protection services.

Capslobodam, this film might do the trick....but does anyone have experience or knowledge of this form of paint protection?
There was some talk about the 3M film going yellow over time. Its discussed in a thread on here, im sure it wouldn't be too hard to find. The yanks were talking up another film, very similar to the 3M, but apparently doesn't go yellow. Come to think of it, I think it was the 2014 SRT thread.
As for paint protection, read the fine print. Ive had it on a vehicle before, and had to argue to get a roof repair after bird poo caused a paint stain, or should I say stain in the protective coating. They asked for evidence we washed the car with a ph neutral car wash, and also that the bird poo was removed within 24hrs of it making contact with the car. I simply argued, prove we didnt....

Yes. A common occurrence. depends on the shipping list, the departure points and what else is in the long queue.

Spot your car at Curtis Bay

In regard to Paint Protection, usually sold by the Big Boob'd, Blonde, Ming Mole, don't waste your money. For $50 and a few hours work, you can do a far better job yourself, using better quality products.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Some interesting responses Guys. Hope Caplobodan is reading.
Paint protection....which way to go. The new 3M guarantees against the yellowing now.
I am leaning towards some 3M across the front and Bonnet and probably more traditional methods on remainder of car.
Just as a matter of interest allpally....is your car bra a genuine mopar product. They do look a bit "daggy" (sorry), but can understand why you would use it on a 70K plus car. Whilst waiting on my MY12 which they never got for me I did a lot of research. I have a few emails back & fourth to Chrysler HQ about their Car Bra. I had noticed disclaimers in their advertising and when I challenged them they were not prepared to guarantee my paintwork if I used THEIR genuine part car bra against paint damage. In the small print on various websites both here and in the US their were disclaimers that you could not leave it on too long. You could not leave it on when it was wet. You could not put it on unless perfectly dry, not to use if dust gets beneath cover etc. etc. The disclaimers made reference that it could cause paint staining/damage etc. I sent them emails saying this was ridiculous. I said the very time you would want it is in the outback on unmade roads against stone chips etc....but you get rain & mud out there in the middle of nowhere. I asked what are you supposed to do if on an interstate trip and it is raining. ARe you supposed to take it off. What do you do the next day when about to head off and it has not dried etc. etc. Their responses left me with suspicion....you know....the type where they say it shoud be Ok UNTIL YOU TRY MAKING A CLAIM and then they fall back to the fine print.
In the end it got too hard....and I did not have to worry because my MY12 order fell through when they tried to deliver the wrong coloured car to me.

Got a mate who is a panel beater - he says the paint protection is a waste of money and the fine print will kill any claim

Our US friends are keen on the 3M product and seems to think highly of it. I will look at the price ( expecting front of car, wing mirrors, side sills and rear qtr panels to cost around $800 installed ) and decide. Maximum steel will show chips and dings so I will be keen to see the alternatives.

The thread on this in the WK2SRT section has a good discussion.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

I have never understood car bras.
The basic concept is to protect your cars paint to make it look good, however the bra itself makes your car look like crap.
I have seen a bra taken off, and the car looked horrible as it was now a two tone as the paint under the bra didn't have the slight fade the rest of the car had.

Thanks for all of your input fellow Jeepers. Webber, your comments about the car bra are true in that it does look, well, daggy and you make a good point about the rain and dust. I can sort of agree with CJD in that dust and water that seeps in under the car-bra can actually be doing more harm than good. That just physics.

I therefore believe that I'll need to choose the better of the 2 evils and go for the 3M product. I will have to make sure that it is the yellowing resistant type as I have ordered the JGC in Bright White. The 3M will offer some protection - better than nothing at all - and still keep the car looking blokey. I know the best way to keep the Jeep pristine is by keeping it in the garage but what fun will that be??

Do you or anyone else know what it could cost for the 3M?

By the way, it's Bruno.

I can see your point SNUKE (ah the names we call ourselves) in that leaving a car bra on is, well, sad. The car bra is really supposed to be used during a trip and removed at either end of your trip. If someone is going to keep the car bra on a MY14 permanently, then I think the JGC should be confiscated and given to another loving family. It's just too cruel!!
