Snuke's picture tells all......LOL!

First of all, thank u all for taking time providing inputs, and apology for causing confusion.

Lets set aside what speed at what gear and at what rpm, and simplify the issue at hand. When a driver pushes gas pedal, s(h)e wants to either maintain or increase speed and a car shall respond promptly. Its as simply as that. I don't think everyone would dispute this.

Reading members' comments along with my research on google regarding electronic throttle control, I would concur wholeheartedly that pressing gas pedal triggers gear downshift and increase in rpm which lead to INCREASE IN SPEED. Bigskiddy kindly proved that with his driving.

In my case, before TCM flash, i pressed gas pedal and the car responded with increase in speed promptly regardless of terrain. After TCM flash, when i pressed gas pedal, gear did drop, rpm did go up, and 1) on flat Rd or light/moderate uphill, e.g, on motorway either merging or overtaking, it struggled to increase speed promptly compared to pre-TCM flash; 2) on big uphill, e,g, mt ousley, i could only push speed up to somewhere between 50-60kph, fall short of wanted speed of 80kph. It begs the question why increase in rpm and drop in gear does not translate into increase in speed? Where is the missing link?

After PCM update, i feel immediate improvement regarding increase in speed: on point 1) even though the speed increase is not as prompt as pre-TCM flash, I'm happy; 2) on point 2) above, i can only push speed up to 75kph, not happy jane. IF why the PCM update makes the car tick can be answered, then a solution to my problem would be on the horizon....

I think i mentioned this theory just after your 2nd or 3rd post on this topic, we're up to about 30 each by now:eek:

The "missing link" is the Torque converter. (There are also 3 friction clutches inside the gear box but we'll leave them for the moment)

It's a fluid coupling between the engine and the gearbox.

I wont got into the technical but .... It allows the engine to keep turning when you are stopped at the traffic lights.
You should be able to "feel" it working when you drive drive slowly in a driveway or take off from traffic lights.
Press the pedal and the engine revs go up and then the car gradually starts moving.
If you've driven a real manual transmission car it does the same thing as having the clutch halfway in allowing some "slippage" between the engine ad gearbox.

The torque converter is working all the time.
It slips a little when doing gear changes so they are smooth from one gear to another. (the 3 friction clutches also play a part)

When you are coasting on the flat, foot of the pedal, the engine revs drop but the car keeps going the same speed. That's the torque converter allowing this.

When driving at at steady load the engine is pushing the torque converter is basically "locked" (usually with a friction clutch) through the driveline so there is no slip and no energy is wasted. When driving on the highway , freeway , up mount Ousley with momentum it should be locked to get the power to the wheels, and not be slipping.

Now....

When going up a steep hill, you are saying that the gears change down to lower gear as they are supposed to and the revs come up as the engine revs faster for the lower gear.

You should be able to accelerate easier in the lower gear.
If you put your foot down in that gear the speed should increase and the revs should gradually increase too.

If your engine revs increase in that gear but the speed DOESN'T increase then this is the Torque converter/friction clutch slipping (the missing link).
If you have damaged one of the 3 friction clutches inside the gearbox maybe this might also have the similar symptoms.

If this really is the problem, It would be worse on hills because there is more loading on the engine/transmission on hills compared to the flat.

If you tried to tow a heavy trailer or did a fast acceleration 0-100 this also puts a higher load, so you might see the same thing happening

I don't know what controls the Torque converter, electronics? , computer? TCM? magic? but if it is slipping or the clutches are slipping then it's not doing its job properly.

To see where all the bits are, there's a nice cutaway picture in the this link which shows all the guts of it.
http://www.zf.com/media/media/img_1/corporate/products/innovation/8hp/www_11_023884zfge_8HP_Produkt_EN.pdf
It's quite complicated as you can see but for an 8 speed design is actually quite simple and clever with only 4 gearsets and handles a lot of torque for its size.

Pretty much everything else you've described (once we get past all of the contradictions and confusion) is normal for the car.

One thing on driving as Benno / Barboots / BigSkiddy said is don't lift right off the gas when going up hill. This unloads the drivetrain completely and the car thinks you are not going up a hill.

You cant drive up a long steep hill in 8th with the engine revs down low. Not possible in any car not even a Jeep.

MMCRH - I don't understand your reticence about allowing your fellow JG members to help.

They have requested a video showing what you say is happening.

You say you cannot provide that.

A couple of times it has been suggested that you meet up with someone that is willing to drive it with you and compare vehicles.

BigSkiddy has just made that offer again this afternoon.

You have not acknowledged that offer.

It doesn't matter how many posts or explanations of revs or kph's or declines or inclines or whatever you post, the written word on a forum is no substitute for the real experience.

If I were you and experiencing what you say you are and I truely thought that this was an issue that Jeep Aust did not have a handle on, then I would be champing at the bit to meet up with other GC owners who could substantiate my claims.

I don't understand why you seem (to me) to be blowing the guys off when very real offers of help have been made.

Oops, my oversight. Appreciate Bigskiddy's offer. Thanks Mate. Will keep your offer on my radar for the time being.

Jeep Aus has the full car scan report and the dealer awaiting their response. Hopefully the service guy can provide me progress update next week If Jeep's response is 'it appears to be normal', i will request the service tech to drive up big hill in person. Experiencing is believing.

Oh man....

Is it just me or are we being "taken for a ride".

Well not for me to judge but there seems to be a bit of a discrepancy in the quality or rather consistency of the descriptions in terms of the English language used.:glare:

Some posts on other topics are perfectly understandable. Yet this topic with 40 odd replies many are hard to understand with the particular brand of "pidgin English" they seem to be in.

If English isn't a natural first language then thats ok. I don't have any problem with that. It makes it a little more tricky to understand but I'm used to talking to, writing to and meeting people I many countries for my work.

I'm just tryin' to help out.

Bugger! Nrb - That is no good. :(

We took delivery on June 20 2013. Build date was April 5th 2013.

No magic dust for the early builds then. I did have the 'update' done at the 40k service. It's a matter of waiting and driving I suppose to if it has worked.

What do you think is an appropriate timeline for a decision on whether the Dec 18 flash has in fact resolved the issue?

Oh and just adding - I have my own personal little (big) elephant sitting in the room in the form of a 2.0L CRD 2015 KL Cherokee. Do I have to think about the DPF in the baby Jeep? I have been avoiding thinking about it. It is a brilliant vehicle thus far but other than other forum members in the UK and Europe who have purchased the CRD, I find my self alone with regards to this on the forum. :(

I hope the KL is as kind to me as the WK2 has been with regards to the DPF.

Not sure SJ&L. The update hadn't been done on mine. Was going to have it done at the 50k service. I do mostly open road driving and towing so I was surprised when it happened. But hopefully that was my first and last DPF problem. I like the system as it eliminates black smoke and soot emissions, but it needs to be reliable.

So my 4/14 built Grand is due (overdue) for the first service by time, not kays, but it's just been booked in to maintain the history. I've been watching with interest the various campaigns on these things, and interested in some of the negative effects some have claimed from having them applied.

I was keen to see what the service department had queued up for my vehicle. The dealer listed:

14-087 = HVAC
14-089 = Radio Nav
14-104 = DPF / Clatter
P64 = SSCM (ESC function)
P44 = BCM (indicator fail warning)
Half-shaft replacement (parts order only)

I currently have no HVAC issues, and my nav is fine. I'm wondering if I should ask they leave these two updates unapplied? I'll grab the DPF update... I'd really like to know what the changelog is on it first, but that simply isn't going to happen hey.

So any comments on the HVAC and nav updates?

Cheers,
Steve

The HVAC updates have only made mine worse as posted. Think that if you are not having issues with it leave that one alone. From what I understand they are still working on it!!

Yeah, I had 14-087, 14-089, P44 and P64 done at my last service in December.

I haven't noticed any difference in the nav, but I did lose all my uconnect settings and have to set everything back the way I liked it.

My climate control has been all over the place since I got the car, and the 14-087 hasn't made much difference. I find turning auto off and on again fixes it, but like I said nothing noticeably different before or after.

I had these done today -

14-087 = HVAC
14-089 = Radio Nav
14-104 = DPF / Clatter

I didn't notice any difference in the 1.5hrs I drove it tonight. My Uconnect settings were all in tact.

The misses said she noticed a difference, it was only unlocking the drivers door when the FOB was pushed to unlock. I went and had a look and many settings had changed, yet many were the same.
One positive was that the 14-089 update fixed my problem with audio from my iPhone 4S not playing back via bluetooth. Not sure how or why, don't care, it now works.

I don't normally give people a wrap, but I just got off the phone to Louis in parts at Barnesdale Jeep Parts (Dwyers). There are humans still out there!

Gave me a great price on a new bonnet protector, without any bs. They are going to ship it to me, unlike any of the Sydney dealers.

Will deal with them from now on.

I can find two service bulletins that cover fixing the ECO off button fault (won’t stay turned off) but they are linked to the 5.7L 21-001-13 and 3.6L 21-004-15.
I can’t seem to find a TSB that offers this fix for the CRD, am I blind?

#13,040 ·
Roger that. I had a little bit of work convincing the service advisor that I wasn't going to have the HVAC and nav updates... shortly I'll see if that's was what went down. I really hope for good things, as the sales guys at Maddington are a real pleasure. They entertained myself and the pooch like best mates yesterday.

Cheers,
Steve

I got told that I couldn’t not have work done if some others were done. issues with the VIN and claiming the compensation back form jeep etc…

At my last service (Jan) requested not to have the transmission update. Only air-con and U-connect plus recalls. I heard that it changed the shift pattern and introduced the harsh downshift routine again on some vehicles. My transmission ( took a while) but is smooth and shift points are spot on for my general use and towing. Basically have come to the conclusion with Jeep updates lately "if it's working don't fix it".

That's interesting BennO had the same updates done, was actually early Dec not Jan and received the vehicle back with all settings as before. This I queried with the service department as that hasn't been the norm and I was still having HVAC issues. Now I really wonder if the HVAC update has actually been applied.
