It's what is referred to on this site as urea . It's fitted as std on USA delivered jeeps to get approval for all 50 states in terms of emissions. It helps clean exhaust gases, especially For high sulphur content diesel. Not a requirement for Australia as the engine passes emission requirement s for here, so won't be on delivered vehicles for this market.
Some Mercedes and various others have it installed, and its generally an extra expense and a pita. I got my windscreen sprayed by an ml the other day - puff of water on acceleration- by all accounts it's a urea system that causes it.
