Count me in on this one. Heading over the West for a few years with a camper trailer and will be doing a heap of driving in the bush. The 3M protection sounds like a good idea.

Going to do this as well, I was thinking most needed protection would be front for stone chips then fenders , A pillar, and down sides. You can buy the re branded ones from auto one etc, to have a play with - I use it to protect mountain bike frames.

I would think window tinters would be most likely to have the skills and experience to apply, it can be applied wet, slid into place, then squeegeed to remove soapy water..

There are a few products out there. Is used clear vinyl for motorbike farings once, and it was thick and flat, but then couldn't make small radius changes - so it would be good for flat doors. Thinner stuff was easier to bend, but the one I got was super sticky, so I really should have used it wet. Then there is the 1080 type stuff, which is put on dry, but doesn't stick until pressure is applied with a credit card type edge, and heat to get it to mold to shape.

I have seen quite a few 4wds with thick stuff all the way down the sides, but below the centre line of the door - so half way up. Might be a nice compromise between looks and decent protection. Maybe also along roof edge as well......

Edit, found this thread which pretty much covers the whole topic for anyone interested
Do I need the clear bra or no?

Just read the first 4 pages, the rest is a dick measuring competition.

Big plus for the Laredo (apart from not spending another $10K, is no bloody CD player)
If we go the Ltd, I will also get Luxury Group II, as the ventilated seats will be awesome.

Taking it from the top of the Spec Guide:

— Leather-trimmed seats
— Dual rear exhaust with bright tips
— Power Liftgate
— Mirrors - memory, auto-dimming for driver and passenger
— Tyres 265/50R20 Kumho all-season (instead of 65/60R18 Michelin all-season)
— Wheels 20-inch polished wheels with Mineral Gray pockets (instead of 18")
— Memory System — Radio station presets, last station settings, driver’s seat position, exterior mirrors, power tilt/telescoping steering wheel settings for two drivers, actuated from driver’s door panel or each unique key fob.
— Heated second-row seats
— Heated steering wheel
— Power tilt/telescoping steering column
— ParkSense Front and Rear Park Assist System(2) — Sensors in front and rear bumper detect obstacles; includes shut-off switch
— Navigation with 3D mapping
— 9 premium AlpineŽ speakers including subwoofer

— Rear seats USB ports & Air Con controls
— Lighter timber trim on dash

— Tinted glass (Suspect Laredo has this too)
— Deep tint glass on rear windows (Suspect Laredo has this too)
— Interior front footwell and centre console bin lighting (Suspect Laredo has this too)

— STUPID CD PLAYER

And the option for
Luxury Group II
Includes ventilated seats and axis perforated Nappa leather trim
I was definitely on the laredo on Friday, but then investigated retained value, and it sort of looks like its hard to get any money back on leather seats been added to the laredo, and same for window tint, and the limited is getting better than $6k more than a laredo at 2years old ( keeping it to wk comparisons).

So net cost of limited versus laredo might be as low as $1500 per year of ownership, given I was going to put leather in the laredo anyway.

Would the nappa seats be something on stock limiteds though? Thought that might be a factory thing- ie 4 months.

There is still no way there's 10k of value, possibly about $5k to me, but I can sort of justify it on the greater fool theory of sales. Ie as long as there is someone just as dumb as me come selling time, then I get most of my money back LOL ( works for share market booms!)

Edit - and to add in context of the other posts above. The interior of the limited looks so 1980's Mercedes to me, so timber inlays will be wrapped in carbon fibre 3m film, to bring it kicking and screaming into this century

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

I think you are spot on, looking at Carsales.com.au, I know when I filter, I never straight out look at Laredo and try to se Leather Seats, so out of the $2K or so they costs, you might get $500 better than non leather on resale.

There seems to be a clear distinction on resale price, but I still don't see where the 10K is ($11.5K once you add taxes etc..)

As for Lux II, I suspect there will be some ordered in already with that spec, I know I saw plenty of MY12 & MY13 in car yards with that already.

I just don't think they'd are enough my11 and my12 on the used car market to make real decisions around retained value. When a few start coming off 3 yr lease in a year or so - that is when the fat lady will sing...

And everyone is different - I don't put a single cent of value on leather. In fact it is a negative for me - too hot in summer and too cold on winter. I put my money into things that mattered to me, tow bar, qd11 and quadralift. Better to have what I want rather than worrying about what the next person might want.

Guys ( girl). I am trying to place a self imposed 24 hour embargo on myself to be quiet to leave air space for others but Pharmabohys comments have flushed me out for just one more post until this evening.....\
Shannon sat me down a long time ago and warned me of the dangers of buying a lower spec model and then adding leather or Quadra lift or whatever the jargon is.
He said to look closely before you buy. His advice was that if you start up speccing a Limited you will nearly have an Overland but when you go for resale it will still be a Limited and will reflect a base Limited resale value. They may take some things into account. But if you bite the bullet and get the Overland you get all those extras but get the resale of a base Overland.
I hope that makes sense. I just had to come out (before my embargo ends) in case someone spent 60K plus today without making sure what the added specs do to your resale. Car yards are cheeky. When you trade in they only want to give you money for the base Limited but then they place it on the lot and advertise all the add ons you paid to put on it and charge the next person for them.
I suspect Shannon might be right but don't really know. Comments invited.

I agree. My dealer mentioned the same rationale and I am glad I was fortunate to be able to stretch to the overland. Having said that however, there's not much out there where the base model has carries as many of the goodies as the laredo.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Webber,

If you get a chance can u try the ACC "adaptive cruise control" and see if it does "Stop Start". I was told if should, to test set the ACC and follow a car into a traffic light the old system would drop out under 30k's/h I think.. Comes up with a disengage warning... The new system should bring u to a stop with no break input, then take off again..

Hope we get this! Heaps of traffic around my place!

My apologies if I am getting too off topic; however sorry to disappoint you guys there is no chance a SRT8 is going to be anywhere near a HSV on the track. The cornering speed in a Club Sport would be so much higher than a SRT8, that alone will be make a huge difference in laptime.

I would never say "No Chance" as it is dependent on many factors.
Throw in some tight turns and a wet track and I think the HSV may be in for some troubles. While a HSV will corner faster, they would get a good run from a SRT with 2 average drivers on a track.
