Hi Munars
I don't want to influence your decision to take on a novated lease, but I would advise exploring the option of a "normal" loan. I am just ending (yet) another novated leasing agreement and investigated other options this time.

I have a loan separate from, but attached to my home loan with fixed interest rate of 5.14% fixed for 3 years and reverting to variable rate for the last year. At the end I will own the vehicle, not have a $20K+ residual to pay out, and it will have cost me significantly less in monthly payments. Tax advantages of a lease are really non-existent with current low interest rates. My accountant agreed.

I also got a price slightly better than the lease company could source.

Having bought a bright white Overland CRD with ORAII (delivery expected late July), I have now purchased 8x Yokohama Geolanders ATS G012 tyres and 4x MY14 Laredo rims. The rims are from MY14 Laredo owners upgrading their wheels.

8x Geolanders = 4 wheels, 1 spare, 2 camper trailer wheels, 1 camper trailer spare.
4x MY14 Laredo rims= 1 spare, 2 camper trailer wheels, 1 camper trailer spare.

Geolanders $325 each ($150 cash back on the Kumhos if I drive straight to tyre store after delivery, so 4 tyres at $175); MY14 Laredo rims $125 each.

I won't have the pressure reading transponders as these are taken to the new wheels / tyres of the owner upgrading. Once it is time to rotate the wheels I could transfer the one's I have, buy from ebay (if available) or forget about pressure readout.

I am not recommending the Geolanders in particular but I am willing to give them a go.

Not everyone will be looking to do the above, but if you are, I hope this information is useful. After I have my jeep home I will post an update with my first impressions of the tyres.

Cheers,

Sparky
Hi Sparky. How did you track down Laredo owners wanting to sell their rims?
I need 5 rims, + I need to get off road tyres. Look forward to hearing about your impression of the geolanders.
Thanks

Munars, my last lease vehicle remained on the previous policy when there were changes. I now have just signed up for a new lease with my Overland. Whilst I will check with my provider, these changes are yet to be retrospective. If the PM does get these changes through, they should, I say should apply to new policies from the effect date.

Just read this ...

There are currently two methods to calculating the fringe benefits tax for cars. The operating cost method requires businesses to log the cost of running a car multiplied by the proportion of their personal use of the car. The statutory formula method multiplies the cost of the car by 20%, regardless of the actual personal use of the car.
This means the statutory formula automatically assumes significant proportion of use of the car is for business purposes.
Under the government’s plan – from July 16, 2013 – contracts entered into will have to use the operating cost method in calculating the fringe benefits tax on cars.

Yep, current car comes out of lease in November this year. Have got a quote I was happy with from the lease company last Friday and was going to fill in the paperwork this week and submit my order for an SRT.
Looks like I missed the boat by not doing it yesterday!

Statutory method means flat 20% FBT payable. I.e. can use the car entirely for private use but only pay FBT on 20% of the vehicles cost.

For me it was a way of getting a tax deduction by salary sacrificing using pre tax money.
Now I won't get a new car because there is no tax benefit doing it this way and FBT on the whole amount would actually make it more expensive I think.

I am spewing because I have done a heap of research over the last few months and was really looking forward to a new Jeep.

This announcement today will probably put all notated leasing companies out of business overnight but also have a major impact on new car sales. If the other 320,000 people in Aus with a novated lease are like me and decide to just pay out the residual on their current vehicle at the end of the lease and keep the car for a few more years, rather than get a new car every three years, then I imagine this will have a significant impact on car sales, jobs in certain industries and maybe the economy as a whole.

I guess it is early days and I am only going on news reports from today's announcement, but I was going to fill in the paperwork this week and order a new Jeep, now I won't do that and will wait and see what happens.

Hi Ghostcon - sorry I missed your message earlier. No haven't installed these as I haven't received my car as yet, but have read the instructions and seen how they're installed, and they are easily fitted.

Yep and the effective date is for all new leases or changes to existing leases from today's date.
If you entered into your agreement yesterday or earlier then you are OK.

Edit: just read the last part of your post which says this.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Have just filled out paper work , + sent some back to lease company. Have spent months reading/researching the 2014 Jeep GC , and found one I could pick up when paper work went through. Now have to put everything on hold, and see how the changes will IMPACT me. Thanks Kevin.....

I know, politics should be avoided, but...

If the polls are correct, 50% of my country are a bunch of morons for supporting Kevin! I can understand voting for him the first time but his track record is shocking and he is directly responsible for some crap policies that we currently have. People have short memories!

Sad to hear that it will directly effect prospective GC buyers.
