Thanks Blakey. This is very interesting. I did some more testing this am. The whistle disappears as soon as the vehicle is bumped into Neutral. This is very reproducible whilst driving down an extended incline near my place, all I need to do is to convince a dealer tech to come for a ride with me .... even though the nearest dealership is 30k's from my hill!

Hi Russell
I think I've seen other comments, maybe in 4x4 mags, about the noises you are describing. From memory its cause by not having much,if any, wheel travel left once the cars is fully raised.
I haven't got my car yet, but I'm expecting to hear these sounds myself.
Cheers
Steve

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

The GC is notorious with suspension bottoming out when QL is at full height. Almost sounds like the shock absorber is going to protrude into the cabin.

Just to clarify, the term is "topping out"

4. Are the 20" wheels OK for off roading ?

5. Are the rock rails similar to side steps ?
2 - Correct, then incorrect. Currently we are all waiting on a solution, either from Jeep or the aftermarket. Stay tuned.

3 - There's some other stuff around, but after weighing up the additional cost and potential hassles getting them I opted for a Mopar set. (HEY NOONS... THE PIT AWAITS YOU! )

4 - My opinion is "no", but some will argue they are. To provide a balanced perspective, it depends on the terrain and distance from replacement tyre sources. I believe it's fair to say taking the factory 20" Kumho tyres to the destinations I typically go to would mean you don't KumHome. They are far too soft in the sidewall. I did up a list of alternatives which shouldn't be hard to find if you "go up a level" from this thread.

5 - Similar, but different. A side step will be pretty much destroyed if you allow the ground to contact it to a significant degree while negotiating uneven terrain. It may prevent or limit damage to the sills in the process. A rock rail is less friendly for stepping on as they are a bit slippery, but will handle a substantial amount of the vehicle's weight on it. Touch up the paint or leave the scrape as cred. I have suspicions that removing them at a later date may leave signs of their presence. Others who have actually installed them or at least witnessed it may weigh in on this and clarify.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Can I just pick up on Point #4 re: the Kumho's.

They're crap. We have 18" and took a very large nail a few days ago to one. Not the fault of the tyre, it would have knocked out the best of them, however when husband took it off and replaced it with the spare, I guess it was the first time over the last 3 months that we really looked at the wear.

He reckons another 10,000kms and they will need replacing. (Currently sitting close to 8,000kms).

Without mentioning anything about this to the tyre place this morning, when I took it in to be fixed, he also mentioned about the Km's on the clock vs the wear that he saw on the tyres.

To that end, we are in the market for a new set. Recommendations please.

So, Overland with ORAII (so 18" needed).

No real off-roading to speak of but need something that will handle a steep gradiant in wet grass and mud ie: our acreage.

General driving is off main-route roads with dodgy surfaces.

Currently on '07 JGC are Hankooks which appear to be ok - probably have 50,000kms out of them so far - maybe need to look at them more closely next pink-slip check which will be in 12 months.

Recommendations please oh wise ones.

The tyre guy has recommended Toyo. He has them on his LandCruiser and is very pleased.

Thoughts on what we should buy? (Budget is not a constraint).

Sparky74 - I assume those links were to discussion on suspension noise, but they only take me to the top of the page.

If you haven't already, check out this thread:
Off Road 18"s
EDIT: Post number one is where Barboots gives the results of his considerable research.
I am going to replace my 18" Khumos with the Bridgestone 697's I think, as I want a Light Truck tyre for the tougher sidewalls, and they are the only one in the stock size.
My next choice would be the BF Goodrich A/T's, which are only slightly oversize, but I have consistently got over 80,000km on my Landcruiser.

Note that if go oversize at all, then you need to change your spare to the same size, and this raises issues of fitting it in the wheel well - some might fit, some don't.
