Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Well we had our camera fitted which took them nearly a week and its not worth the plastic they are made from.
1. It points so far down you can read the number plate.
2. It has the dynamic grid lines but when something is approaching the
first green lines it already about 40 cm from the back of the car.
3. Its not worth a butt load of wind at night.

This is a camera that the dealer sent up to me which the packaging says its a Jeep camera for the 2014 GC, I believe I will wait till we get down to Perth next and just take it straight to the dealer and get them to sort it out.

And the one I have doesn't even have the fixed grid lines despite my dealer assuring me at the start that they had the dynamic grid lines.

I'm beginning to wish I got the Limited as most of my issues seem to be associated with dealer fitted items. Are the cameras in them any better though?
Limited camera is clear and flawless - love the dynamic grid lines .

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

I have noticed others praise the Limited's camera, however I would only rate it as pretty good. That said it copes with varying light, which I gather isn't the case with the cheap-arsed ones getting slammed into Larados.

There's no reason that retrofitted Larados can't actually offer better video performance than the Limited, with the exception of the dynamic guide lines. It's just a case of spec'ing the right camera. A contact for cameras in China was recently posted here... commercially I've always "got what was paid for" from Sharpvision in China. With a decent screen, the performance from a ~$50 to $75 camera should be between good and fantastic day or night. That's the rub though... whoever is supplying the cameras seems to be making a selection purely on price. The imagery I've seen posted is commensurate with something like $20 or less cameras.

The thing that kinda makes me sigh about all this is that sometimes all parties are to blame for these situations. From my understanding, Jeep save three bucks by not running video cabling to the back of the Laredo, meaning a dealer who wants to get you into one has to price into the deal the removal and refit of a considerable amount of interior Tupperware to get to the head unit. I've already heard one person here had to hit the dealer up to replace a swag of badly handled trims... a function of poor staff training, time restraints, and/or a give-a-rat's approach to the task. This retrofit is what I'd quickly and without investigation rough out as a... hmmm, let's say... five hundred dollar job to do properly with quality gear plus due care and attention. No one wants to pay that and the dealer knows no one will, so they take a bit of a hit in their margin, then try and scrape back what they can. The only place they can go is the camera element itself, and because no one understands the specs, vital parameters like auto gain control, background light control and auto iris... the critical requisites... are probably ignored. Otherwise the dealer will call in their mates from the likes of MotorOne, who specialise in smashing cheap electronics into motor vehicles and making serious money in the process.

Perhaps the statement "and it's got to have a reverse camera" is the starting point of the problem overall???

Don't for a second get me wrong though. I do not accept cutting the guts out of things, and if dealers are going to say they can fit cameras which are "just like the one on the Limited you drove", well FFS they should do it on that basis!

Cheers,
Steve

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Laredo Camera Issue.

Direct Action maybe?
Direct Action means being advised by someone who knows.

That someone is NOT Chrysler/Fiat/Jeep/Dodge/RAM/Alfa or whoever theyre called this week.

That someone is Milous and his mates.
They are the only ones that know the Jeep product intimately.

So therefore I'm going to PM Milous for information relating to the Rear Park Camera.
  • Do Jeep USA have a preferred before/after market camera for the MY14 Laredo
  • If so what is the make, model, specification, resolution etc of that preferred camera
  • Is it compatible with U Connect system
  • Is that preferred Rear Park camera installed on the production line
  • Is it the same as the Ltd/Overland installed camera
  • Would it give the same performance as that of the Ltd/Overland
  • Is it possible to use the very same camera on the Laredo?
  • Is th3e wiring harness already installed to accept the Rear Park camera (one would assume it is if dealers are installing them already)
And questions along those lines. Who knows, there may be such a mythical creature over there that C/F/J/D/R/A Oz do not know about.
After all, they dont know much about anything anyways.

So before I do PM'ing is there any other suggestions to the correspondence that may be included to Milous and mates??

Bluey

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Bluey all I'd add is whether in the absence of a particular camera there might be a specification for camera performance?

ie: minimum lux; signal to noise ratio, lines / pixels, etc.

Also whether features such as automatic gain control, auto iris, etc are considered prerequisites to acceptable performance as a "like OEM" supply.

Cheers,
Steve

Our camera problems seem to stem from the fact that the Laredos in the US don't have cameras as standard. However, are they available as an option over there and if so what is provided,

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Have posted before about the rear cameras. Mine is totally useless, washed out and looks likea fish eye camera lens. I will be going back to the dealer next week and asking for a camera that works, waited over 11,000 klm to get the camera fitted, only to get this rubbish fitted. I will also call into the dealer and get a brochure and check out the picture that shows the reversing camera, if it is something different to what I have I will be asking for that. Love the car but this is just slack to Jeep Australia.

For what it is worth, might be time for you guys with the camera issues to start making a noise back to Jeep head office. Maybe everyone coordinates and bombard them with calls in a short period. Ring and ask to speak to the GM. Tie them up in knots.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Well, heres something in lieu of the rear park camera!!

Received from my dealer a very generous voucher for a portrait photo to the value of $600.

From my investigations re the camera in the States, thats about the value of the Laredo camera and the wiring harness.

Coincidence?? Spooky!!!

So does an ugly old fart like me get a $600 glamour photo done??

I can take 16megapixels of myself for nothing!!

Ohhh, I know Mr Dealer. Give me the $600 and I will source my own high res camera. Thats a good idea!!

Or the photo mob can come out to my place and shoot me draped lovingly over the big red bonnet of the big red firetruck!! A really sexy photo that one of me in my size 22 board shorts and SOB T shirt (Silly Old Bugger)

Where do they come up with these ideas??

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

It is obvious that Jeep Australia have been caught with their pants down in regard to the cameras.
What appears to have occurred, that due to lack of forward thinking, (nothing new with this mob of misfits) they have ordered a batch of cheap chinese cameras and dumped them into cars. I would go armed with the Jeep brochure, which shows the cameras with guidelines and clarity, and ask them why your's does not meet that specification. The following page from their website should be quite adequate to demonstrate your expectations. New 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee - The Ultimate Search Engine

The link of the brochure states "dynamic guide lines not available on Laredo"
