I noticed you have a trail rated badge, is it factory, or did you put it on.

Maybe it's hard to tell from the pic but I actually think the image quality looks comparable to our Overlands camera and looks quite OK. Yes the angle is wider however I certainly wouldn't say its useless. Maybe it just needs to move out further?

This is not great news for me as I have been told that a camera has been assigned to my Laredo and its ready for installation! The thing of it is that I contacted my dealer since I had heard nothing from them after taking delivery of my Laredo 10weeks ago! Im scared now as to what I'm going to get installed. I will try to demand a "genuine camera" the same as those in the Limiteds .... lets see how we go.

No I put it on I bought 2 for about $12 delivered but decided against putting them on the guards so I have a spare if it disappears. Its all cast aluminium and well made.

Yep the pics actually enhance the camera output. Onscreen it's pixel lated, washed out and grossly distorted. Otherwise it's good.

I've noticed that some Laredos have grid lines and others don't. Are the lines to do with the camera? If so they must be sourcing cameras from all over the shop, but they're all the same crap that's for sure.
I'm over the camera issue, I'll just replace it myself.

Unhappy Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee information - Australia

Well the boat is tied up at the dock now, but not the one with the web cams. Its a bit further up the Yarra at Appleton Dock Road, near the Bolte bridge.
I was looking forward to watching the unloading, bugger.

In the rare right light conditions its ok, but if in full sun or at night - thats when you would call it USELESS.. The darker it is the worse it gets, late at night its just a blurred foggy mess- cant see if anything is behind you.

Just had my Laredo out tonight for the first time and I totally agree that the picture from the reversing camera is a blurred foggy mess - as good as useless.

This is the camera fitted to my MY14 Laredo.

Clearly nothing like the genuine camera

Yep, it certainly appears possible that the dealers are getting screwed by Jeep Australia and resorting to finding their own solution. In a lot of cases this would mean they call in MotorOne or other similar corporate auto electronic suppliers to sort it out. These guys tend to source sh!t equipment as cheap as possible, brand it and re-sell as super awesome "just like factory" gear. Often the recipient pays for it by having to take the vehicle back for failures, installation issues and other general grizzles like below expectation performance. They also tend to dictate what the installers get for a particular installation... so the poor guy on the tools takes a hit if the job runs overtime. Hence the work can often be rushed when it needs a bit of additional R&D. I've seen this sh!t-show first hand... and it makes me extremely sad that it's the state of the industry as a majority.

Many cheapo cameras have reference lines in attempt to emulate the systems found in some OEM installations. The lines are overlaid in the camera and become part of the video signal. They can not be "dynamic" (ie: move with the steering angle) unless fully integrated with the vehicle electronics, which excludes mostly anything except OEM supplied cameras. So if there's literature or promise made that you'd get dynamic gridlines fitted, that would be an angle to approach from. Not that the promise of VR on nav is getting me anywhere in my efforts to sort that one out!

If you have received your camera and want to improve on it, you'll find it 99% likely that there are plugs in the tailgate... but also that they might not be a "standard", as many cameras come with their own loom and unique intermediate connectors. This can make a "re-plug and play" job difficult and require soldering skills... or a re-cable.

If you've not received your camera and are watching this in horror, maybe instead request the cabling run to the tailgate with a standard connector RCA connector on the end and a measly amount of cash back for not taking the camera. Then shop for a visually superior camera... there's sure to be some discovered by other's trial and error... or by having it demo'd on the car.

I really feel for you guys who were happy with what the Laredo offered, but wanted / needed a reverse camera so worked that into the deal. You should be getting what you shook hands on.

Ciao,
Steve
